I think I had a hacking incident a week or so ago...I was in a game with danny and all of a sudden asked what my OLD email was.....as he wasn't quite sure so I told him and he asked why I just LOGGED onto msn with it and then quickly logged off....I hadn't of course I was with my current one....*Shrugs* I keep the old addy active so I can use it as my 'junk' email LOL so I had to go through and change my password and such...*Shrugs* It's a shame people are doing this!  |

Apocolypse: Obviously you have been paying attention to what the posts have been saying and haven't closed a blind eye like everybody else it seems....The so called "hacker" as he is being called is doing nothing more than "social engineering" and he is "fishing" for information,Anybody who has used AOL for any amount of time knows all too well about either of these options...Also seeings that MSN is the only messanger program mentioned by anybody,if he is hijacking those accounts then obviously he exploiting some sort of security flaw in it,an MSN is notorious for security problems...I find it hard to believe that anybody would want and MSN and a USM account,ecspecially when MSN accounts are still freely obtainable...  |

What leads me to believe this is to hack somebody you need an IP Address and it's practically impossible to obtain that information,unless it's posted on a chat forum that logs such,you are involved in a file transfer then it's easy to do a trace route back to the source,or unless the IP is given up willingly,which you should never ever do.. But I do agree with Phe on changing your password frequently,but don't leave it saved on your computer write it on a piece of paper and tape it to your monitor,and don't keep the password automatically saved when you login to a website...I also suggest using a firewall,there are several free ones and some that are a try before you buy which will normally allow you to use it for 30 days before it ceases to function...As I believe Phe had mentioned in an earlier post Zonealarm is rated the best..It comes in two versions...One is free and the other has more options and capabilities so they charge you for that one...You can obtain it at http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp |

Ok I deleted the comments that were really inappropiate to this post IE the tossing back insults. I should have remembered to put hackers in "" because thats what Ive been doing when I talk to my fellow admins about these guys. Your ip address also shows up on emails and there are tools to trace, track or read ip addresses, so yes getting a firewall is probably about the only way you can be sure that is not getting out. PrincessAmy your comment confused me too lol. Alot of this is common sense, if you feel like your account may have been jepordized let the admins know asap so we can protect it. and FreeGirl, yeah I had a conversation with one of the "hackers" who threatened me thru the conversation and said all they wanted were accounts, I know its dumb but that is what they said. |

eh, not all hackers are bad hackers, most hackers are legal ones, they are part of organizations that help police catch bad hackers(also, illegal hackers are known as crackers to any legal hacker). I make this point, because i am a legal one, i do it just for fun, i go to a site that promotes good hackers, because it really is a good learning experiance. They have a server that you are told to hack into, it is a competition and there are several levels to hack, and once you get to the top, you have to develop new ways to keep others from claiming your throne (king of the hill). I have never done any illegal hacking, there are some sites that talk about it. i forgot the one i used to go to, most of the stuff i saw on there was hacker police, competitions, and a whole bunch of security. If you know how to hack, you are more able to protect yourself from others.  |

Actually BCAR there are good hackers,the Federal government and other security firms employee several of them,to tighten up security on there own systems,as well as hacking the systems of terrorist,and other well we'll just say scum of the earth low lifes...But as far as this individual goes..We all know that he up to no good,so to be honest I wouldn't even classify him as a hacker,cracker,phreaker,or anything of the sort he is doing nothing more than playing games with others hopes and dreams....This individual knows that and thats why he is playing the same card over and over again..... |

Zonealarm can be gotten around by hackers and it has. It might be rated the best, but everyone needs to remember that nothing is foolproof. You just gotta do the best you can to protect yourself. as I read from others on here and this is true. Other Hackers are the best at stopping hackers. this is why the police and other orginizations hire hackers to work in computer crimes. So I guess all I can say is use a firewall as long as you can (till it gets hacked...lol and eventually someone, if they are good enough of a hacker will), change passwords frequently, and give out as little info as possible. this is all I can say that anyone can do. thanks for the post Phe, and stay safe, luv ya  |

I actually know a number of Computer Security Techs who work for large organisations like Banks etc here in NZ, and also contract to overseas businesses etc. Their job is basically to 'test' the security of a specific database by hacking it. Plain and simple...that is their job. As also said by Pyiel, hackers are also extensively employed by Law Enforcement and Military Forces for the safety and benefit of YOU the citizen...by electronically gaining access to the database of criminal organisations etc. They aren't all bad at all. Jeeze, I decided not to reply to this until now.. I've been blocked for a week and I kept getting the MSN page. Rad told me today that around 20 different people or addresses have been using my account. Plus he said that he saw a cable connection, which is strange cause I just use dia-up. I don't know how or why this has happened, but I do know it's unusual cause I only go to the USM chats,and never any other type. I'm hoping this all gets straightened out and soon, cause the computer that was blocked was the one in my room, and I don't want to be stuck using a slow Compaq in the living room..lol  |

Everyone asked such great questions and had some helpful suggestions. Ok so if we have some 'good' hackers who are members of USM, would you guys like to try and help us out at stopping these guys? Or what do we do? To the person who asked about MSN, no they can not hack into your account just because you have msn, they have to talk to you and get info from you something like your ip address. Gail Ive been trying to find out about legal measures but it is hard getting answers for that area. Maniac, why should we allow someone on the site who chooses to act this way? I think trying to bully your way into anything is a poor way to go about things. There is a word for what he is doing, terrorizing. |

I'm betting you have the IP by now of the guy doing this-heheh-all you need is to find a hacker forum-I know of some but E-mail me if you want to know them. (they're not G rated because of porn popups-so I won't post them here) All you really need is to tell some people on the forums whats up and ask for help-his computer/s will most likely be dead within a week. Most hackers really don't like script kiddies-heh. |
