Candles
When using candles for spellwork it's always important to use one of an appropriate color. Of course, in a pinch you can use white as white contains all colors. Just be aware that black is a lack of color and white will not substitute for this one. Sometimes you may want to inscribe the candle with the purpose for which you are burning it or inscribe it with symbols of your purpose. Most often a spell will require that you burn a candle until it burns itself out. I've found that these spells are usually the most potent. It doesn't matter what size the candle being burnt out completely is. The candle will only hold as much energy as you put into it. So, by burning it all the way out, you are ensuring that all the energy is released. Votives and typical tapers take a very long time to burn all the way out, and if you don't have the time to wait for it to burn itself out you may wish for safety's sake to snuff the candle with a candle snuffer and relight it later. (Never blow out a spell candle or you will be blowing away the magick.) However, if you have 1 1/2 hrs. or so in which you can watch the candle while it burns you may wish to use a mini-taper, also known as a chime candle. These are little tapers (approximately 4 in. tall) which can be found in most metaphysical bookstores in a wide array of colors. Some stores even have candle holders available for this type of candle. If you don't wish to buy these little candle holders you could also purchase a flat glass pillar holder. Then you simply affix the mini-taper(s) to the pillar holder by dripping some melted wax onto the holder then holding the candle's bottom onto the wax until it sets.
Chalice magick
I actually don't use the chalice much for magickal purposes. Of course, I use it for the "Cakes & Ale" section of my religious rituals, but the only other use I really have is to make holy water during ritual (for asperging/cleansing the circle). To make the holy water, I fill the chalice with tap water and add 3 portions of sea salt using the tip of my athame or sword. Once that is done I bless it in the names of the deities I'm working with. I have read that a chalice can be kept full of water to bring prosperity into one's life or that requests can be written on slips of paper and put into an empty chalice until the requests manifest. Although it seems reasonable that these methods might work, they are not something I've tried myself.
Cauldron
have two, one of which I use as a censer. I have filled it with sand and burn incense on lit charcoal tablets (the type made for incense--not for BBQ's) on which I place powdered herbs for incense. I also find that if I've just finished burning a smudge stick that the sand is a good place to bury the lit end of the smudge stick to put it out. Sometimes for a spell or ritual purposes a candle being burnt in a cauldron will be required. In this case I stick the candle in the sand and use it as a candle holder. The other cauldron I have, I use for petition spells. To do a petition spell, call upon your chosen deity. Write out each request on a separate piece of paper and light it in the flame of a candle. Then toss the flaming paper into the cauldron to burn.
