title: "8 Mile"
starring: Eminem, Brittany Murphy, Mekhi Phiffer, Kim Basinger
genre: drama
The profanity-spewing, lyrically talented, controversial prodigy himself, Eminem, is making a name for himself in the new flick "8 Mile". Directed by Curtis Hanson, the film is a gritty noir setted in low-income Detroit. Eminem is Rabbit, a factory working trailer-living confused teen who, to survive in the racially-impaired world around him, competes in freestyling competitions put on by his friend (Phiffer). The movie is well crafted, and well made, and Hansons style of edgy directing works as well as his last hit, "LA Confidential". Also in the mix is Murphy, who gives a sexy performance as Rabbits love interest. The movie demonstartes it's message loud and clear -Rabbits ultimate way of survival out of Detroit is his lyrical talent- but is inhibited by the fact that Eminem is starring as a struggling rapper. It's hard to imagine Eminem as Rabbit: multi-millionaire poetic musician as down-in-the-dumps almost-not-surviving teen. Fortunately, it's really the movie's only fault, as the film builds to a exciting rap-off climax that echoes Eminem's own story. Hanson also reunites with Kim Basinger, who is altogether wasted in her role as Rabbit's whining mother. "8 Mile" is a flinching portayal of unsocialized talents captured in the violent realm of Detroit. grade: B+
