Life in a retail store......ugh..*PunkStarChikk*

I've been working for the retail stores for about 4-5 years now. I've been working at the retail store that I'm at right now for almost 2 years now. There are some good points and bad points of my job.

The Good:

I work in a small retail store and I like being about to get to know my fellow workers there. Unlike when I worked at Target, no one knew that I existed and never treated me right. At my job, people tell me that I'm doing a good job and acutally praise me. Makes me feel good.

I also get to see what new clothes and items that come into the store everyday and I get to check out the cool clearence before anyone else does. I can get really cheap stuff. Like clothes for under 3 bucks or even 49 cents.

I always have a set schedule. I always work the same days and hours. I don't like it when they have you open the store one day, close the next and open the next day. I really hate that. I perfer working in the mornings.

The Bad:

Putting up with the rude customers.....UGH!!! Like today.... I had a handful of heavy Christmas items. I had a good grip of them and I started to walk towards the shelf where I was going to place them. Then this rude snotty girl gets in my path...and expects ME to move out of her way...

Or when I'm standing on a stool, a woman tried to go pass me with her cart and her cart hit my stool which almost made me fall. I looked at her and said "Excuse me. Could u please go around?" She completely ignores me and says "Excuse me! Let me through!"

And why is it sooooooo hard for people to put away things if they don't want them? I hate it when they take a pair of clothing off it's hanger and just tosses it over the rack of clothes or on the floor. Is it so hard to put it back on the hanger and back on the rack?!?

And why to parents let their children run around the store and not keep an eye on them!? What's the point of bring them to the store if you don't watch them. Whenever I see a kid by himself, I tell them that you have to go to his/her parent and they just ignore me!! They make a HUGE mess in the toys section and don't even bother to clean it up. We acutally had a little girl die at our store because of their parents not watching her. She was only two years old. It was soooo sad. I could not forget that day.

Oh what else is there to complain about??? I hate cleaning up customers and even lazy workers! One of my major pet peeves.... Uhm..... yea... maybe that's all.. That's all that I can think of...

Maybe... If customers were to only know how frustrating and stressful it is for a worker. But most of them just don't care. They always make us feel bad...as if we were just an item or something...or that we're just a worker with no feelings....

Ugh...Agg.....Grrr and growl.... Okay....I just had to vent about all this... I had a really bad day at work today...

Do any of you know how it is as working in a retail store? Whenever I can get another job, other than retail, fast foods, pumping gas and resturants...I will work there......

*sob* I don't wanna work tomorrow...... Thanks for reading...

Date: 11/10/2002 10:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 47699    I've worked at a lot of places in my life and some of them were in retail. I understand exactly what you're talking about because I've done it and it's much the same everywhere. There are both good and bad things about working anywhere. At least that's been my experience.
Date: 11/10/2002 10:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 53055    Wow, that's rough Cuzin PunkStar...same goes with people at restaurants. They can be really rude sometimes too.
Date: 11/10/2002 10:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 57653    I'm am so with you! I have been working in retail for 7 years..since I was 18. I have been working for the same company though in different stores the entire time. When I finally quit I won't be going back into retail! A good customer can really rbighten your day...but a bad one can ruin your WEEK! I've had people call me obscene names and even threaten me...as if I should HAVE to take that as part of my job, which I don't get paid much for! I don't understand why people go out with bad attitudes and take it out on others...stay home and make yourself miserable! GRRRRR....now I don't want to go to work tomorrow either!! ~SilverFire
Date: 11/10/2002 10:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    school? training? to get outta retail you need some other sort of experince to get into you can try temp agencies and see if you can get on as a secretary

Date: 11/10/2002 10:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 57653    You have a point midnightly...they offered me human resources at my store...I didn't want it but I had no choice lol. I figure now that at least I can take that experience and LEAVE retail while I go to school. I'm saving up for a darn car so I can get another job and get my butt in school! Retail tends to take over your life... ~SilverFire
Date: 11/10/2002 10:44:00 PM  From Authorid: 57653    I work in one of those large stores you were talking about Punk....Are the smaller ones really better?? ~SilverFire
Date: 11/10/2002 10:47:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53909    The smaller stores are ok... But like in a big store, they usually have you working in one department..and in a small store, sometimes you have to work a couple departments.
Date: 11/10/2002 10:49:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53909    I know how to work the mens, the kids, the home, juniors, men, lingera (sp?), acceries (sps?), the fitting room, the stock room, register, mark downs, ...pretty much everything but the office work and customer serice...Customer Service is one thing that I will not work.
Date: 11/10/2002 10:49:00 PM  From Authorid: 53339    OMG where do you work at. For a sec I thought you work at my store. Except mine is a clothing store. We have rude and incosiderate customers who leave pile of clothes in the fitting rooms. We have people who spill drinks and won't even tell you there is a spill. Some of the girls are really lazy. Like today.... me and the toehr manager opend the store. The store was a mess. Nothing was done the night before. The floor was not swept and the mirrors were all dirty. clothes was on the floor. It was really bad. It was disgusting.
Date: 11/10/2002 10:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 53339    Man this job is just to help me get through school until I become an accountant.
Date: 11/10/2002 10:55:00 PM  From Authorid: 53339    And also these people swear we are babysitters for there kids. Or there own personal shoppers. "Can you find me a red shirt in Medium?" "um, Maam, did you look and not find one?" "well, no. I never actually looked" I mean come one. I am not paid enough for that crap.
Date: 11/10/2002 11:00:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53909    BabyCry...I know what you mean. The parents always get mad at us for asking to keep their children with them. I hate it when they bring up a pair of clothing and ask us. "How much is this? There is no price on it" And they expect us to know how much it is right there and then. Yea...I've gotten questions about if we had other sizes or colors...
Date: 11/10/2002 11:03:00 PM  From Authorid: 53339    We always have stuff on sale. SO customers sometimes think that everything is on sale. We always get asked "is this on sale?" "No" "How about this?" "No" How about this?" "NO" I mean if you have to aske becasue there is no hang tag it probably isn't on sale.
Date: 11/10/2002 11:08:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 53909    BabyCry....whenever we have something on clearence, we usually stick a red sticker of the reduced price...then people come up with a non red sticker and ask if it is on sale. Of course it's not. They also like to try to switch prices to get the stuff cheaper.
Date: 11/10/2002 11:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 57653    Oh, I just LOVE the customers who call and want you to do there shopping for them BEFORE they actually come to the store. Do you have this? And this? Can you hold it until I get there? Grrrrr! ~SilverFire
Date: 11/11/2002 5:42:00 AM  From Authorid: 35720    SilverFire, I KNOW! I have like 50 piles of clothes being held for 50 different people back in stock and THEY NEVER COME BACK TO PICK IT UP! And when they do, it's like 5 days later! "Oh I'll be back later on tonight!" YEAH SURE! And this drunk lady made me get the hook and take down EVERY SINGLE JACKET on the rack and then she DIDN'T EVEN BUY ONE! I was like "UGGGGH!" And I hate when they QUESTION me. Like I'm stupid! "Um excuse me Miss, but did you take the 15% off? Because this seems more than it should be." "Yes, I'm sorry I didn't explain it.. the clearanced items don't get the 15% off.. only the jacket." "Well it clearly said in the ad that it was 15% off everything with your charge card." "I'm sorry ma'am, clearance items aren't marked down." "So they expect you to know all the rules??" "Look.. (*points to the receipt*) You got a good deal on the clearance items as it is." "*sigh* This is why I hate shopping here.. *walks away*" Well WHATEVER to her! I'm not the freaking manager! I do my job! I don't bend the rules for some PMSing customer!
Date: 11/11/2002 7:20:00 AM  From Authorid: 24856    Awwwwww sweetie I have worked part-time retail nearly 7 years now. Thank God it is not my main source of income. I have learned so much about people working in retail!! What people expect, how rude they are and how low some can go just to get away with something. I have witnessed children out of control...like running the dressing room bell numerous times.....and finally I walk over and tell the child to please stop.... or you will bring security to the floor...then the parent is angry at me?? Recently a Mom let her 2 year old toddler wander in the store.....and I ended up following the little guy, for fear of being taken?? What is up with a Mom like that? Seeing what some customers will do to steal from the store and when confronted....personally attack me? I have lots of stories if you ever want to share. On the other hand, I have met some great customers that treat me and other associates with great respect.
