How can I fix this?

A few days ago, I sort of sent a nasty email to my best friend. I had sent her one of those quiz things asking questions about likes and dislikes, and there was one question which asked, "What characteritics do you despise?".

I was having a really bad day, and not in a normal state of mind (not drunk or stoned or anything, but really depressed and ready to do something really stupid and permanent), and I got offended by one of the answers she put down.

I basically emailed her saying that we are no longer friends because she can't stand me. I really regret this now, but at the time I thought it would be easier to have her hate me if I went through with what I was planning.

Now, I feel better and I want to tell her why I said what I did without telling her everything (I don't want to worry her). I'm just scared that she'll take it as some lame excuse. What can I do to make it up to her? She's been my best friend for ten years, and I don't want to lose her because I was acting childish. Please help!

BTW I plan on going to councelling very soon, because I can't go on living this way.
