i think vollenteering is a good thing to learn it's a great skill to have to deal with people and issues and you learn things about yourself to graduate from my school you have to have "work experince" a mix of vollenteer and paid hours(or it could be all vollenteer) i don't think you can be prepared for the "real world" with no work experince |

Midnightly, i agree, but we 'my advisory class and i' are practically paying for our grade. and if it's volunteer work, it SHOULDN'T be forced!! and what also makes me mad, is money is money right, well i gave my teacher some change and she said 'this is pitiful, i don't want it' ....that was rude, and hypocritical of her. people who have no money sure would appreciate it. |

Dizzy, that's how i feel too. i enjoy doing volunteer work, but i wont participate if it's paying for my grade. i don't agree with that at all, and this is about the third thing they've done this year, that you've HAD to do something 'not just volunteer' but like if you sell raffle tickets or something that's your grade, if you don't you get a zero. this class is CAREER EXPECTATIONS, i don't plan on selling tickets the rest of my life,... |

If you don't have a choice in the matter then it definitely could not be termed volunteering. I do think it may be a nice thing to do....can't say for sure since I don't knwo exactly what it involves....but to force you to pay 5 dollars and bring in food in order to get a grade is definitely not right. What about those students who don't even have 5 dollars? What kind of awkward and embarrassing situation does that put them in? I'd be all over this one if it happened to a child of mine. I just don't agree with force nor do I agree requiring kids to bring in money. |

Okay, maybe "volunteer" is the wrong word here, so change "volunteer" to "community service work." I think that, not only should community service work be required, it should be a standard part of the school curriculum. I was a member of a national community service program for a year and was stationed as a volunteer in a school where "service learning" was the heart of the curriculum. The idea: by performing service work in the community students have a hands-on learning experience, they see first-hand the positive effects of their work, they are embued with the spirit of giving to the community, and recognize themselves as part of a community-- in my opinion, these are all requisite parts of becoming a good, and productive citizen, which is the whole point of education. I think that there needs to be greater empasis on community service. Our society is too insular-- too many people have no appreciation of what goes on outside their neighborhoods, in other parts of their city, among people of different racial and economic backgrounds. It makes them apathetic and insensitive. Incidentally, I don't believe that service work should include forcing students to bring in cash for a grade. Extra credit, maybe. |

they should be able to choose teir community service and volenteer work. in high school, i did not have spare cans of food or 5 dollars. my father lost his job and we had to sell most everything, our main food source was fried potato sandwiches, and we had no hot water. i don't mind community service or volenteer work, but it should be something the student is interested in so they are not turned away from it as adults, and it needs to count for some sort of credit. i don't believe in students being required to do extracurricular crap after hours for no credit. enough of their time is used for school, the homework that follows for hours after school, not to mention any school related activities or sports that they are involved in that take place after school, ie: swim meets, football games, dril team, cheerleading. not to mention working parents and trying to fot familty time in. service fine, but for credit and no monetary expense. there is numerous service opprotunities that don't cost a cent. |

To be forced to bring the money and food is NOT volunteering. There are some students I am sure thet need that 5 dollars and food more then others and will not be able to bring it, so what the teacher gives them a failing grade? As a parent I would have a talk with the teacher about this one. |

I think it depends. In your case it's forced and that should be illegal. It's like cruel and unsual punishment because you get a zero if you don't pay. |

Sounds like volunteering in the Army. I would argue that if the $5 cannot be made mandatory in a public school system. For example, what if I were Jewish, or Muslim, or someone who did not believe in Christmas all together. Why should I be forced to pay for something I don't believe in ? ( I'm just playing the devils advocate here, so please don't kill the messenger. )... |

Its a nice thing to do but it should not account for a grade. Plus the fact that some kids CANT afford to bring the money and are in need of the food themselves. |

Somebody needs to tell that Teacher if He/She (which ever) did not bring five dollars for each Student in her class along with a Non perishable Item, so that the Kids can Present it to charity fund, that she is going to have her monthly salary cut in half. See how she likes that! |

I agree with you all the way. Bring that up to the person in charge and see what they have to say. Id be glad to dobate what I could for Christmas, but if I was told it had to be a certain thing and amount, I would be really annoyed. |

Illegal. They can't force you to bring money in as a volunteer action, especially if it is in the public school system in support of a religious holiday. |

Volunteering is a wonderful thing to do but it should not be forced.... because that would defeat the whole purpose; plus when someone volunteers its because that is where their heart is... if someone is forced it will not be coming from the heart and will result in negative feelings and a negative experience which might lead to that person never wanting to volunteer by their own free will. But I do believe schools should offer the ability to get involved but not demand or insist on specific things. Good debate! |
