Maggie ~ Hey Larry~

She had passed away some four years ago, and my father was heart-broken.

Mitzi was the light of Dad's life. Plenty of love and always a cheerful smile. But it always seemed my mother was intrusive with their relationship, always yelling at Mitzi for being in the way. But at that time, I don't think mom understood.

But there were those times, better times, when dad and Mitzi would take a drive through the Idaho wilderness, just the two of them. Enjoying the day, and appreciating each others company.

She passed away shortly after my dad had his stroke. He was unable to drive anymore, and mom had a hard time adjusting to my father's needs. He can walk now, for short periods of time. With the help of a walker. And Mitzi continued to be herself, regardless of my dad's recent condition. And that always brought a great deal of joy to him.

She suddenly passed away, and was buried on the family land, near a cherry tree. Mitzi, a black female Labrador Retriever. A family member and Dad's confidant for almost 14 years.

Mom did'nt want another pet, not at that time anyway. Mitzi was dad's girl, and rarely answered to anyone else. And they were getting up in years, she thought. But as time passes, the heart begins to soften.

I was pleased when I got a phone call from mom last weekend. She herself had some good news to share. It seems there is a new member to the family.

Her name is Maggie. And she is a two month old Chiuahua. She is full of life and energy. And I am willing to bet that she brings plenty of joy to my mom and dad. And I think that is great!

Sometimes we take for granted the friends we can make, are'nt always..are'nt neccesarily human. The happiness in my parents voices when I spoke with them pretty much said it all.

And I cannot wait to meet her, the next time I go to visit my parents. For someone who can bring so much joy to one's life, is certainly a friend of mine!

Date: 11/25/2002 11:56:00 PM  From Authorid: 23610    What a very nice post! Again, well written. It reminds me that I keep thinking that I should get a dog for my son who is 2 and basically an only child. Someone told me to get a black lab because they are such wonderful, loving, gentle companions. Reading your post brings that back to mind....and I see it as a sign that I maybe need to get moving on it. LOL.

Date: 11/26/2002 7:08:00 AM  From Authorid: 54247    Wonderful story. I, too, am a dog lover. At age 7, my new stepmom's Chiuahua/Terrier mix became my best friend. Saved my life one night when she woke up the whole house and when the let her out, she was running after me barking her head off. I was sleepwalking (on a gravel road)! We are in our 70s and have 2 little ones - rat terrier and a mini pin (actually they are our deaf son's - but he cannot have dogs in his apartment - and thus he is here most of the time anyway). You mad my day! RAT
