Would You Like A Job Like This? **Frankenstein

After I left the insurance agency earlier this year, I went to work waiting tables at a new restaurant here in town. My bride was doing the same type of work at another place not too far way at the time. She doesn't drive so it was important that our schedules were similar. At the place where I was working, the staff was way too big even though it was very busy most of the time. It wasn't unusual to see long lines waiting outside the doors. Even though that was the case, once we'd clocked in, we weren't allowed to go back outside for anything until after a manager told us we could go home for the day. More than once, I heard waiters and waitresses asking the managers if they could go out to their cars to get some medicine or their glasses and they were told that they couldn't. Breaks were practically nonexistant. When the place closed at night and all of the customers were gone, there was a chain put on the doors so we couldn't get out without a manager letting us. Sure, we could have used the emergency door but the alarm would have gone off and we would have been fired. It wasn't unusual for me to be scheduled to get off at ten and not get out of there until midnight or after. Even though I repeatedly explained that I had to go because my bride was already off and she was waiting for me, it did no good. They would just say, well, none of us are leaving until this, that and the other are done. I walked out of there one night and decided that I was never going back. My bride was still working so I decided to take some time off to try to get my first book published and as you probably know, I succeeded in doing that. Then I started working at the grocery store where I am now. Anyway, that restaurant where I worked was a nightmare and I couldn't tolerate it any longer. The one where my dear bride was working turned out to be horrible as well. I'm happy enough now just as long as I can get scheduled for enough hours. Anyway, that restaurant was a lousy place to work and I've heard that I'm not the only one who thinks or thought so. What do you think? Do you think that sounds like a good place to work?

Date: 11/26/2002 6:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 50791    OMG! If they didn't let people out to go get medicine especially if it was right outside in their car that wasn't right at all! The Deli that I work at now isn't even that bad. The boss let me rum home one day to get my cold medicine and I live like 10 minutes round trip from work! That wasn't a good place to work at. Glad ya aren't there anymore!
Date: 11/26/2002 6:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 53427    Sounds lousy to me. How do they get away with not allowing breaks?
Date: 11/26/2002 6:40:00 PM  From Authorid: 56293    Wow! I would have walked outta there! Sounds more like prison than a job.
Date: 11/26/2002 6:40:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 47699    Joey, you aren't far off there. It seemed like a Chinese sweat shop or something.
Date: 11/26/2002 6:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 20956    geez Frank, that places sounds bad! i dont know the laws are over your way, but here its against the law for employees to work over a certain amount of hours without a break and if i had medicine in my car that i needed to get then i'd be allowed to get it ... if not we'd simply go to the workers ombidsman (sp) and complain. no one should have to work under those kinda conditions. Man it really makes me appreciate my job were i get pretty much free rain ~ i went home for the other morning cause my Mum had locked herself out the house. my supervisor was fine for me just to nip off for half hour to let her in. i think its good that you left frank
Date: 11/26/2002 6:50:00 PM  From Authorid: 40881    That sounds crazy..lol.. I work at a restaurant. Whhen we are buissy, No-one takes breaks.. You better pee in your pants if you gotta go that bad..cause your not getting a break. But what you said is just nutts! LoL! I work the graveyard shift alone.. and I have so much fun with the (freaks) as the day girls call them! I make awesome tips and my work is fun moast of the time. I wouldn't let that one job scare you away from being a server. People don't think so.. but we make BANK! lol.. sorry that happend to you.. I would have had someone investagate.
Date: 11/26/2002 6:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 28848    In the few times that I have worked in restaurants, I found that it just wasn't the type of work for me. I thought it was horrible. You're over-worked and under-paid. I will never work in a restaurant.
Date: 11/26/2002 6:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 50556    I would NOT work there. They couldn't pay me enought to put up with that crap...isnt there laws against this?...
Date: 11/26/2002 7:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 35160    isnt it against a fire code 4 them 2 chain the doors shut. im just curious. oh and it defintily would be a lousy job 4 me, i would tell them off then quit. nobody tells me i have 2 stay locked in after my shift is over, aint no way in h.e. double hockey sticks. 8^) huggs shay
Date: 11/26/2002 7:13:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 47699    Shay, if there was a fire, that's what the emergency door was for but if you use it, you're butt had better be blazing or you don't need to bother going back there. Sunny, that's the law here too. For every four hours you work, you're entitle to a fifteen minute break if you want it. Well, who wouldn't want it? I only worked for six hours today and I got to take off thirty minutes for lunch. Where I'm at now is much better. Yes, Raider, there are laws against some of the things that go on there. If most people knew how they operate, I don't think it would be such a popular place. Thanks, everybody.
Date: 11/26/2002 7:27:00 PM  From Authorid: 35825    OMG!! Now, they went too far there with the chains on the door!! It's a good thing you got out of there when you did! I would never be able to handle that.
Date: 11/26/2002 7:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 12103    Well obviously it sounds pretty bad if you cant leave or go outside for a sec...
Date: 11/26/2002 9:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 45948    OMG, that is just plain crazy. I did work at this one resteraunt where if we got slow the manager would make everyohne clock out so she could save money but we were not allowed to leave the building even though we were off the clock. I didn't work there very long, let me tell ya!!
Date: 11/27/2002 2:56:00 AM  From Authorid: 37101    Sheesh, sounds like a Hard Rock.. Oh wait, I mean, a Hard Labor Cafe! -
Date: 11/27/2002 3:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 44321    I am so glad you got out of that place, when they treat the employees like prisoners/animals locked up. I know how it is to need the job and you stay until you really come to a point where you say Ya know what I cjust can't do it anymore and you think we will manage :) I am glad you are in a better job Frank.
Date: 11/27/2002 5:07:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 47699    Thanks, Medusa! Thanks, everybody!
Date: 11/27/2002 7:35:00 AM  From Authorid: 54247    Think of the experiences you and your bride are encountering. Put a tag on it - everyone and every job is different. Had some horrible experiences - dime store clerk - think we were called "soda jerks" when we worked at a counter that served ice cream dishes. Worst was door to door selling. You learn and it makes you a better person. RAT
