"LAST DANCE" Pretty as a picture, life of the party, she'd always light up a room. Weak against temptation, and lost inside, she'd start fading soon. The night was her favorite time, and she'd dance to the band, beer after beer, pill after pill, until she couldn't stand.
Her golden smile and gentle laugh, was a sight of this small town, her friends accepted her crazy ways-but her addictions had started bringing her down. Like watching a bad movie, people just seemed to stare, meanwhile she was crossing a line of no return, yet she danced everywhere.
Her skin began to gray, and her lines started to accentuate. The once happy girl- with the million dollar smile, finally met with "too-late". Affliction had taken control, and tomorrow just never came. So her plans to straighten up and put herself back together, only prospered into pain.
Still she danced, slower, altered to the very core- her party was about to come to a screeching halt, and then she'd dance-no more. Her eyes turned yellow, but looked far from the yellow of sunshine, she had ran her course, too many times, and she wanted to sway to the music one final time-
I slipped a dollar into the jukebox, and softly she rattled off the songs to play- she gulped her shot of booze and scooted to the beat, she slung back her long hair and started her fade. Thinking, as she moved to the music, about the children she'd leave behind, refusing to shoot down the demons within her soul, choosing instead- to die..........
As the words of 'WONDERFUL TONIGHT', echoed through the tavern walls- at long last- we danced the last dance:
I held her in my arms, and smelled her perfume as we spun circles in the lights. If only she had known that I waited for this dance, my entire life, would it have changed her decision to destroy her world, and all that lay within. Instead of being around to watch her children grow, she chose to party to the very end.
As I held her close, on that slow, beautiful song, I knew she was close to death. We held each other tight and as we danced real slow, and tried to speak- she took her "last breath".....................
