Satanic Ritual Abuse Is A Lie! Urban Legand Gone Wild

  Author:  15070  Category:(Debate) Created:(11/28/2002 3:49:00 PM)

The Satanic cult legend One of the most tenacious hoax involves imaginary evil religious groups who engage in the ritual murder of children. This story describes an evil religious cult which is engaging in degenerate sexual orgies, kidnapping babies, conducting human sacrifices, drinking blood and eating the flesh of their victims. It has many points of similarities to Urban Folk Tales: many people believe it to be true, even though it is not. This tale differs somewhat from most urban folk tales, because: it has lasted for almost two millennia; the group blamed for the abuse changed continually through the centuries (from Christians in the late first century CE to Satanists today); it surfaces from time to time, typically in rural areas, and can trigger a Satanic panic - a mass hysteria in which a many adults fear that their children are in imminent danger.

History of the legend This belief is directly traceable back to the first few centuries CE when the early Christians were in conflict with the Roman authorities. The government created false rumors in order to facilitate persecution of the Church: They twisted elements of the Eucharist and said that the wine and wafer were really the blood and flesh of ritually killed babies. They noted that Christians often picked up newborns who had been abandoned to die of exposure. The Christians then placed the babies in loving families to be raised. The rumor implied that they were really collecting babies for human sacrifice.. They implied that the Agape (Love) Feasts were not group meals, but were really excuses to engage in sexual orgies, incest, sexual abuse of children etc. [There appears to be archeological evidence that Gnostic Christians did engage in ritual sex; they regarded semen as a sacred fluid and consecrated their status with it. But their rituals did not involve child abuse.]

Minicus Felix, a first century Roman writer wrote about the Christian groups:

"As for the initiation of new members, the details are as disgusting as they are well known. The novice himself, deceived by the coating of dough (covering a sacrificial infant), thinks the stabs are harmless. Then, it's horrible! They hungrily drink the blood and compete with one another as they divide his limbs. And the fact they all share knowledge of the crime pledges them all to silence. On the feast-day they foregather with all their children, sisters, mothers, people of either sex and all ages. Now, in the dark, so favorable to shameless behavior, they twine the bonds of unnamable passion, as chance decides. Precisely the secrecy of this evil religion proves that all these things, or practically all, are true."

The legend remained inactive for many centuries only to surface again shortly after the end of the first millennium. Many people had expected the end of the world would occur in 1000 CE and that Jesus would return in triumph. They were bitterly disillusioned when life continued as normal. Their anger was directed against the church, which retaliated by dusting off the Roman rumor. This time, it was directed against heretics and other dissenters, who were burned at the stake.

Between 1022 and 1792, the same lie was repeatedly applied against lepers, Jews, heretics, Cathars, Knights Templar, and Witches. The persecution of the Witches was particularly awful. It was directed at followers of the Old Religion, the Wiccan religion of the ancient Celts. The killings lasted over three hundred years and resulted in the torture and execution of hundreds of thousands of innocent people; most were women; most died by burning at the stake (in Roman Catholic lands) or by hanging (in Protestant countries). There were suggestions of the same rumor during the French Revolution, when the aristocracy was accused of kidnapping, killing and drinking the blood of poor children.

The legend remained relatively inactive during the 19th century, only to re-emerge in the 1930's when it was used by Nazi Germany against the Jews and Gypsies. The story remained unaltered; only the victimized group was changed. The lie was subsequently used by the USSR against the Jews.

It emerged in 1980 in North America with the publishing of the book Michelle Remembers, the first of the fraudulent Satanic Ritual Abuse (SRA) survivor stories. (This book was later investigated by three separate groups and found to be a hoax.) In 1994 the rumor was directed by the Bulgarian Orthodox Church against Evangelical Christian missionaries who were accused of eating babies for breakfast.

Future of the legend The long-running belief in SRA is believed to be more related to our fascination with evil, demonic activity rather than to any reality. Numerous government studies have concluded that no Satanic conspiracy exists. Hard evidence has never been found. However, belief in the legend continues. It is supported by: a widespread and increasing belief in the existence of the devil. In America, in has increased from 37% in 1964 to 60% in 1990. This is the highest percentage of any industrialized country other than Ireland. recurrent discussion of SRA on TV talk shows plenty of soft evidence, the memories of SRA survivors recovered during therapy (one author conservatively estimates 1 million Americans per year enter therapy and recover memories of childhood sexual abuse; this implies about 200,000 per year recover memories of SRA) horror movies which often have a Satanic theme projection of parents' guilt onto a scapegoated group promotion of SRA during seminars and in books by "survivors" and conservative Christians the need to have a new enemy to fear, after the fall of Communism general public anxiety over the anticipated end of the world circa 2000 CE

DEBATE: How did the satanic-panic get so far out of control?

AND

If there is a Satan, how come no one has seen him?

Date: 11/28/2002 6:50:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15070    I understand White Dragon. People DO fear what they do not understand. The Bible "tells" them what "God" will, and will not allow, based on the intrepretations of other men, who indeed had political motivation. I would STILL like to hear from anyone who has actually SEEN Satan, not the mythical Satan's works, (like a "look in someones eyes" etc........)
Date: 11/28/2002 8:00:00 PM  From Authorid: 14226    I think your right.. I have nothing to debate here. But I do have to say people who beleive in God havent seen him (well a majority of them anyway). Love,

Date: 11/28/2002 9:01:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    Besides there is a great difference between satanic worshippers of today and those that were the orginal ones.

you will find the information on some of the most famous contributors to "satanic-panic", and the specifics of how their stories were proven to be lies. The site also includes the McMartin case, and a few others. Mike Warnke (THE SATAN SELLERS) has been proven to be a liar & a fake. You might be interested to read about the facts, in the face of the scare tactics. Glad you stopped by

Date: 11/28/2002 9:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 3321    If there is any sort of superior being on this earth, or inferior as you are asking, how come none of us have actually seen them? And if you say you have, then why do I not believe it? Religious questions are quite personal and have nothing to do with you or me other than what we personally believe-no matter what the religion.
Date: 11/29/2002 8:24:00 AM  From Authorid: 16671    Yes I've heard that Mike Warnke made the whole thing up but that is not to say that others have. I dont think that one should discount all stories just because a few have not been truthful.
Date: 11/29/2002 8:29:00 AM  From Authorid: 16671    Besides anyone can make a web site of those that may have lied about it.

SCAPEGOAT: Satanism scare is mostly hype, expert on cults says

by Michelle Bearden

Judging by Satan's popularity in news accounts and police reports these days, you'd think Satan had been elected to Congress or won the Pulitzer Prize.

But it's not true, says J. Gordon Melton, director of the Institute for the Study of American Religion in Santa Barbara, Calif. and one of the country's leading experts on cults. In fact, there is no suge at all in Satan's popularity.

"The only surge we're seeing is the spread if mis-information," Melton says. "Malicious, suspicious, and ritualistic acts are being attributed to satanism, and people are buying into it."

Melton has launched a one-man crusade to get what he considers the truth out to the public. Using an extensive survey he completed in 1986 as his guide - "The Evidences of Satan in Contemporary America" - Melton makes his case frequently before groups and in interviews.

Most misinformation regarding satanism comes out of police agencies, Melton maintains. That's because, in the absence of true satanic groups, law officials have to blame "something concrete," he says.

"What we've got is creation of imagination, paranoia, and general ignorance," Melton says. "We've got wild speculation and jumps in logic. What we don't have is the truth."

"One story perpetuates another, and, before long, 'experts' in police departments are conductng seminars on a topic they don't really understand."

At the Phoenix Police Department, police spokesman Andy Hill says the agency analyzes every incident that has satanic overtones. He blames a majority of these crimes on "kids caught up in experimentation."

"It's safe to say that most of it isn't hard-core. We're usually dealing with copycat crimes," he says. " I wouldn't consider satanism a big problem here in Phoenix. We know it exists, but it's more underground than anything else."

According to Melton, only three established satanic cults exist: The Church of Satan, a San Fransisco based group headed by founder Anton LaVey; a splinter group, the Temple of Set, also in San Fransisco and headed by Michael Aquino; and the Church of Satanic Liberation in New Haven, Conn., led by Paul Douglas Valentine.

Total membership in all three groups is "probably less than 3,000," Melton says. Those followers are the true satanists, and their numbers haven't varied much in the last two decades, he says.

Many of the acts blamed on satanism are committed by teen-agers who are bound together by drugs and violence rather than demons. While they may use satanic imagery in their deeds, Melton says they are "play- acting" the role of worshipping the Prince of Darkness.

"It's true we're hearing a lot of satanic referneces in today's music, but that's pure commercialism," he says. "Just because your teenagergets wrapped up in certain rock'n'roll doesn't mean he's into the occult."

Some of the conclusions that support Melton's studies to combat the theory of international satanic conspiracy include:

* The existence of a large number of nonconventional religions that have nothing to do with occultism, much less satanism.

* The growth of Witchcraft as a new religion and how it is confused with satanism. Melton labels contemporary Wicca as a nature religion that places great emphasis upon the preservation of life and non- violence.

* Reports of cattle mutilations, which ignore the facts that most are mistaken observations of predator damage.

* The dicovery of common symbols, such as an inverted cross, pentagrams, and bloody altars, which lead investigators to conclude that satanic activity has taken place. However, no evidence of any conspiracy involving the kidnapping and transportation of children for ritual purposes has emerged.

* Fantasies of people who make "confessions" of their involvement on satanic cults. Typically, they cannot supply independent corroboration of the stories.

Moreover, a good portion of the mis-information on satanism - which Melton says is really a "parody of religion" - comes out of evangelical Christian publishing houses. With that bias, "it's easy to see how misinformation breeds," he says.

Melton contends that open satanic groups pose no public threat. If there is cause for concern, it would be the small, ephemeral satanic groups, mostly consisting of young adults or teenagers and possibly led by psychopaths or sociopaths.

"These are the groups that cause immediate danger to themselves and society at large. That's where police should be concentrating their efforts," he says. "In the meantime, we've got to get out of this satanic mentality and get our labels straight

Date: 12/1/2002 10:48:00 AM  From Authorid: 11240    So what I hear you saying is that there are some basis for these stories though not to the extent that certain "control" groups (i.e., police, media, religion), perpetuate on a fodder-fed public. And if that is what you're saying I totally agree. Because in my estimation, Satan is not some "monster/creature", but a entity that is engaged in a design to try to harness God's Power as their own. And I have been reading all about it at this site. God Bless.
Date: 12/1/2002 1:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 57054    how can you prove that people have seen jesus... or god... or the contrast to satan... whatever you wanna call it.
Date: 12/1/2002 1:49:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15070    actually, I cannot. I have to take their word(s) for it.
Date: 12/3/2002 2:23:00 AM  From Authorid: 31275    Yeah, I think some people are so completely in love with the idea of some dark mysterious, secret cult, sacrificing babys...that they don't want to give up on the idea. The people who take this obssession too far are the ones who really end up killing people.
Date: 12/3/2002 2:24:00 AM  From Authorid: 31275    HOW can you prove anyone saw god, jesus, satan, santa clause, or the tooth fairy..? you can't...
Date: 1/17/2003 8:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 27161    the reason no one has seen satan is becasue it was a fairytale creature created by the christian church to keep the sheep form straying from the flock and to keep the money flowing as rev. lavey has said, satan has been the best friend the church has ever had as he has kept them in bussiness all these years

HAIL SATAN

Date: 1/30/2003 9:59:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15070    LOL-I agree. I believe the church created Satan to frighten people, and keep people submissive by playing on their worst fears. But, that is my opinion.
