MoonAngel - Thats how my grandmother has always planned on dying. In her own bed at her own house. Her worst nightmare was to end up in a nursing home. But the hospital told her it was the only choice. Did you know them things cost like $6000 a month!! |

Katsho - those nurses definately need evaluated! The other day when my gram was visiting (its her mom thats in the nursing home) they asked a nurse to be a witness for my grams will and the woman said "NO! That woman is crazy!" I guess my gram got snippy with her. My gram is no way crazy! They go long periods of not bathing the people, they kept her in a hallway for 3 hours yesterday in the cold. They left her in a chair on tuesday from 10am to 7pm! The never give her her meds till midnight..my gram usually goes to bed at like 5pm! Its soo horrible! |

That is so horrible.. I hope I never have to go to a nursing home... I worked in one (in the kitchen) and *some* of the nurses were really mean to them. it broke my heart, luckly the nursing home was evaluated and those nurses were fired, it was all of them and they keep it nice, not all dirty and stuff, so there was no need to close it down... but yeah, some nursing homes are really bad and do need to be evaluated, sadly, when people who live in there tell their family's they don't believe them, where there is really something wrong... I hope everything and your grandmother is ok. |

ALOT goes on in those places that we don't hear about..just the other day on the news I heard about this 80 yr old woman who lived in a nursing home she was found in her bed with maggots in her ear and maggots on her sheets. How sick and gross is that? I would rather take care of my parents at home than send them to a hell hole for the rest of their days. I sure hope I never end up in one either! |

Nursing homes suck!!!Most of them make you believe that they care about your loved one but they don't. Its about money, not love. Can't your gram live with someone in her family? Take a good look. We all have to grow old and we may very well be just like the people you saw there. I love old people, I have a great compassion for them. It has to be horrible to have to give up your life as you once knew it and have to live as othes choose you to do. Please listen to your gram and go see her whenever you can. Question the help thee about her complaints. It could make a better difference for her. |

First of all, not all nursing homes are bad. Your great grandmother is probably depressed. Whomever is her poa should speak to the social services department and see how they evaluate depression. In many cases I have seen, the resident tells the family that they are being mistreated because they want whomever put them in the home to feel guilty. I'm not saying that your great grandma is doing that, but more research needs to be done. How do you know they didn't bathe her? Did you ask the nurses? Abuse in a nursing home or anywhere is illegal. I know that around here we have an ombudsman who represents our nursing home residents and is an advocate for them. I guess another important point is, what was the general FEELING of the place. You can usually just tell. Like were the nurses smiling? Did they say "hi". How were they treating other residents? And many people don't understand the situations with those poor people who beg "take me home." or "help me." Yes, they want to go home. But these people are usually confused. It's a very sad thing to see. Volunteering would be a good idea, because you could see first hand how this place works, and when those people ask you to take them home, maybe you can just hold there hand, and take a little walk with them, listen to them and make them feel like they ARE home. |

And as for what the person said about your gram being crazy... that is unacceptable. You didn't say whether she was a nurse, but if she is she shouldn't be. That should be reported. |

Find out who oversees that home, it should be state funded. The state will investigate your complaints. Let the nursing home know that you will not tolerate negligence. Hugs to you. |

That sounds pretty bad--numerous people asking you to take them home with you--I can understand one senile person but when more than on person asks the same thing of you it makes me wonder if there is something wierd going on in there. I suggest volunteering and then see what does go on in there and then if there is something wrong going on I suggest you report it to the police department.Bless You and Everyone there. |

yes, volunteer. I used to work as a nursing assistant and tried my darndest to spend some quality time with the patients. this is hard as the patient workload is huge. I think that you being there for your gramma and voulunteering would be so great. you not only would be able to make your grammas day brighter, but many of those people have no relatives visiting ever *huGz* I know this has to be one of the hardest things for you to experience. |
