Could You Do It? (A Spiritual Metaphor)... Aeruxia

Imagine this scenario...

You are the parent of an only child. You hear on the morning news that a criminal is going to be executed in the morning for horrible crimes he has committed. For some reason, your heart goes out to this man regardless of his deserved punishment. You call the governor and beg for this man's life and ask for pardon. You are denied. Yet, you care for this man so much that you offer your life in place of the criminal. You are again denied. However, the warden does make you an offer. He agrees that a life must be given in his place in order for the sin to be atoned, but he won't allow your life. He says the only way for this man to be pardoned is to have your beautiful child die in his place.

After much consideration, and because of your deep love for this man, you accept the heart wrenching terms. You take your child to the prison. You offer them as an innocent sacrifice. You watch as they shave their little head in preparation for execution. Then they place your little angel into the electric chair. Right before they pull the switch your perfect little lamb looks up at you with her big blue eyes and asks, "Why mommy? Must you do this to me?" They pull the switch and your child is now dead. Could you do it?

Now, imagine one year has gone by. You are in a café. You overhear a man talking in the next booth. "Yeah, I was supposed to die in the chair last year but this stupid lady actually sent her 4 year old to take my place. How stupid and gullible can some people be?!?" A few months go by and you see in the news that this man is again wanted for violent crimes. He has not changed his ways. Imagine how much your heart would be breaking. However, you still care for this man so much that you actually are not regretful that you did this. You love him regardless of his ways. Could you do it?

Well as for me, I would have let the jerk rot. And even if I had been overcome by a moment of noble insanity and had allowed my child to die in the place of a criminal, as soon as I heard him disrespect my child, I would have jumped over the booth and killed him with my own hands. Well ladies and gentlemen, someone has made this sacrifice. His name is Jesus Christ. He was sent as a perfect sacrifice to free us from the punishment of sin. He loves us still today, even as we reject him and spit in his face, just as this criminal did to this mother. God sent down his beloved Son so that our sins would be put on Him. I don't know about you guys, but I cannot resist His perfect love.

This is somewhat of a morbid and upsetting metaphor, but this is the depth God has been through to save us. If we reject Him after such an enormous sacrifice, then what is left to save us? How thin can grace and mercy be spread? Obviously His love for us extends past any of our own human understanding and power as every single one of us said we would not be able to do this!

Date: 8/18/2000 9:35:00 PM  From Authorid: 9288    Wow.... that is very sad. I would never give my own daughter's life for a stranger. I could never forgive myself if I did! Nice post. BB,
Date: 8/18/2000 9:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 11348    that was sad but beautiful and so true. It brought tears to my eyes and to be honest, no I could not do it. Not at all, not ever. Krazykritter
Date: 8/18/2000 9:59:00 PM    Right over my head.(I guess???)-Gandwere
Date: 8/18/2000 10:07:00 PM    That is a really good comparison. And it IS very true. It is hard for us to understand just how loving God really is. He not only created us in his image and gave us a free will so that we may love him. He also gave us his only son as a savior and redeemer. I dont think anyone could do what God has done for us. And I know I definitely wouldnt be able to give up my child to save someone else. Nice Story!

Date: 8/18/2000 11:09:00 PM  From Authorid: 4902    a perfect story to end the day, ahhhhhh the Love of God.
Date: 8/19/2000 12:04:00 AM  From Authorid: 2011    I don't have any children of my own yet, but I can honestly say that if I were put in that situation, I would not do it.
Date: 8/19/2000 1:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 9786    I personally believe that if you have kids, they should be your FIRST priority, no one else. I also believe that Jesus came here to try to teach us to give as we expect to get, unfortunately that message was skewed and we now have a rather unhappy society caught up on their own petty desires, and forget anybody else. (Sorry this is a sore spot with me>)
Date: 8/19/2000 1:54:00 AM  From Authorid: 10134    Wow..That was good and it really makes you think. I couldn't do that to my child if I had one. But I have a good question in reply. How can God condemn murder when He sent His Son to die for us?.........Rocketman
Date: 8/19/2000 7:47:00 AM  From Authorid: 5484    AMEN,NICELY PUT,AND SO TRUE,HE WAS INNOCENT AND DIED FOR EVERYONE,MAY JESUS BE WITH YOU FOREVER...
Date: 8/19/2000 7:50:00 AM  From Authorid: 5484    NO WAY,MY SON ADAM DEAR TO ME ,I COULDNT DO IT,AS FOR ROCKETMAN,I BELIEVE AN EYE FOR AN EYE...
Date: 8/19/2000 11:15:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 12823    No, Gandwere, this message is for you too. This letter is for Christians and non-Christians, because God's love is for Christians and non-Christians alike. It just gives us something to think about
Date: 8/19/2000 11:24:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 12823    Rocketman: Remember, Jesus was NOT murdered. Yes, people killed Him, But he was a WILLING sacrifice! The Bible says that at any moment Jesus could have called down His angels to save Him and could have had all the evil people who were doing this to Him be killed. But Jesus allowed Himself to die because He loved ALL of us, even the very people who were killing Him. I hear you saying that it is hypocritical of God because He does not condone murder, but yet He had His own Son die on the cross. Jesus' mission on earth was for Him to come down and die for us. In the Old Testament, followers of God had to sacrifice clean unblemishhed animals for sin attonement. Jesus came to free us from this, offering Himself as the eternal sacrifice. Hope this makes you understand better. LOVE,
Date: 8/19/2000 3:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 177    Perhaps I am mistaken, but I believe Jesus was fully human. He was, I believe, a Bodhisatva, one who has undergone many incarnations & was enlightened & opened himself to receive the Holy Spirit as was Buddha (& as we all are).
Date: 8/19/2000 3:51:00 PM  From Authorid: 177    ...that is... he was a perfected soul when he came to earth. He had attained a spiritual purity that would have allowed Him to merge with God, yet He chose to retain human form in order to teach a more enlightened doctrine than the Jews knew. I beleive, that unfortunately, many errors have been introduced (or truths edited, or omitted) that have clouded things & left us with less than a full understanding of the message & mission of Christ.
Date: 8/19/2000 4:04:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 12823    To TC: I see how you feel, but for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. Jesus was the Son of God sent down to us in human form. I do beleive he was perfect, But never perfectED because I beleive he was ALWAYS perfect. However, you are entitled to your beliefs. LOVE,
Date: 8/19/2000 9:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 177    ...I also think that spiritual decisions & emotions are'nt that great.
Date: 8/19/2000 10:21:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 12823    What kind of spiritual decisions and emotions TC? If your religion does not move you deeply like mine does to me, then maybe you are in the wrong religion? Find something that makes you passionate.
Date: 8/21/2000 7:34:00 PM    this is soo true god gave us life we misused life jesus came to die so we can live
Date: 8/22/2000 2:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 12118    if it were me,that scum would be fried scum.yet,God works in mysterious ways and is very loving. He is also a big part of my life.I could never send my daughter to the chair like He sent His son to the cross.love,*sea goddess 142*
Date: 8/22/2000 4:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 13354    Thank you for this wonderful story. It's hard to imagine having that kind of love for someone who doesn't deserve it or appreciate it. Even for someone who does appreciate it for that matter. I guess when we come to realize the GREAT love that God has for us and accept that love, that is when we truely are changed. People can change, no matter how great their sins are because of the GREAT price that was paid for us and the greatness and incomprehensable love of God. God Bless You! Keep on writing. Love, Pam
Date: 8/25/2000 1:39:00 AM  From Authorid: 13637    Truly a sad and dramatic story. I know that i could never do that to my child..never. I do think the way you explained what God did for the world was perfect. Again...a very sad story ~Xanthapay~
Date: 8/25/2000 9:51:00 AM  From Authorid: 12835    This was a great analogy. I have posted a somewhat similiar story called " Mystery Flu ". You should check it out as it also
portreys the great sacrifice in a picture that we can relate to. Thank you for my daily reminder of the love of the savior. St. Pete

Date: 8/26/2000 3:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 177    I agree with you about the emotions & passion of beliefs that you are entusiastic about. But I guess I was thinking more about the resentment and the "sickly" feelings I always got growing up, when the mission meetings I attended were "tested" and they'd sing these tear-jerker songs that tugged at your heartstrings, &/or made you feel fearful if you didn't stand up and "profess".
Date: 8/30/2000 7:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 177    ...I mean how would you feal...if you're being made to feel that you are one heart beat away from going to he##?
Date: 8/30/2000 8:54:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 12823    I don't follow you? Like how would I feel if, say Budhists were telling me I was going to hell because I wasn't a Budhist? Do you mean something like that? Well, since I am strong enough in my beleif, it honestly wouldn't really bother me because I feel like I know the truth. Now, if I was without faith, I honestly do not know. I was raised in Chritianity. I have been a Christian for 21 years (all my life) so I really have never been without faith. So I have a hard time putting myself in the shoes of those types of people. Does this answer your question? I didn't really understand the question. If this is what you are asking, then this is what I feel. LOVE,
Date: 9/9/2000 7:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 12906    so so true aeruxia *sniff*~
Date: 9/12/2000 7:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 14338    This is so true. I am not a Christian, but I can see the good analogy from what they believe. -Fire Bird-
Date: 9/17/2000 1:19:00 PM  From Authorid: 7092    I couldn't do it...Not me...
Date: 9/17/2000 8:47:00 PM    Heck no I couldn't do it! Good analogy, though.
Date: 9/19/2000 11:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 15360    Your stories are breaking the ice in me. My heart goes out to you Aeruxia. You must a very kind person, indeed.
Date: 9/21/2000 8:12:00 PM  From Authorid: 15621    wow,thats a powerful story.nicely put
Date: 10/5/2000 4:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 16849    thats awsome! i just wanna know if i can share this with my prayer group that i will get to gether with this friday! -pyro-
Date: 10/16/2000 3:42:00 AM  From Authorid: 4309    No..I could not sacrifice any of my family or friends..I actually would not think it fair if I had to do so..I would sacrifice anything of myself including myself but I could not take something of some one elses away. I just could not..The fact God can shows how much he believes in us and how much we do not in him..Not a single one of us would sacrifice our own children or family..God's sacrifice also shows how much he loves us as well but most importently shows us that we do not have to sacrifice our family and that we do not have to be perfect. We are already "perfect" as we are.
Date: 11/2/2000 10:49:00 PM  From Authorid: 14254    This is a good analogy Christians will enjoy. Have a great day, Aeruxia! :)
Date: 3/12/2001 1:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 6915    Wow, I've never thought of it this way...*feels awful*
Date: 3/28/2002 11:06:00 AM  From Authorid: 16069    Wow! Thats amazing. I really dont think I could do it. Watch my daughters die for some guy. No way! But I do see the point your making. Very interesting!
