Just some more interesting information in a book on ancient folklore that I have.... not for the faint hearted! :)
BEASTS OF ANCIENT ENGLAND
The Gulon - devoured corpses so fast it could digest only by squeezing itself through trees
Goofus - Bird that flys backwards because its only interested in places its seen.
Gremlin - Drinks petrol and can rais and lower airports as pilots come to land
Hornworm - 4 legged serpent that buries itself in the sand. Its horns are only exposed to lure then attack their prey
Gabriel Ratchet's Hounds - Pack of demon dogs pursing damned souls in the sky
Unicorn - Untamable and proud. Caught only by naked virgin's under trees, said to have found a horn and adopted it to one's self
Griffen - lusted for treasure.
Manticora - Indian with manshead and tigers body. had 3 rows of teeth and mouth from ear to ear. Its tail covered in sharp quills
Lambton Worm - Dragon like with hugely long body and killed everything it could
Conway Afanc - half man and half horse. Not killable by mortal, hid in caves and harmless to man
Llamigan Your - Water leaper - gigantic toad with wings and tail instead of legs. Seizes fishing nets and tries to drag boats under the ocean. Eats sheep that it lures and drowns
Boobrie - Huge duck that ate sheep and cowes
Nuckelavee - Barrel shaped body and lolling head. It had long arms and was skinless! You could see its muscles and it spread plague through droughts.
The Chuch Grim - Black dog that protected churches. It had been seen at unicorn funerals and it helped the passing of souls. It had a friendly face
Padfoot, Barquest and Shrike - Based in Elizabethian times - when there was a thin line between myth and reality, man was extending the boundaries of the known world and these were the beasts of this time...
Mimicke Dog - Raised by apes and helped the poor. It was friendly and danced and played and said to mimik people.
Wilde Beast - Ferociously maternal and killed if you came close to it. Carried babies on its back and would kill then than ever have them captured
Lamia - original man eater/child capturer. From Ancient Greece it sucked on dancing young mens blood and disturbed their sleep
Boa - Dragon - it sucked cowes dry then ate the rest.
Hyora - double headed monster and feared the most. If a head was struck off another one grew in its place.
Triton - Scaled in seas and was always alone. Said to raise storms and wreck ships.
