Sin Eaters <<RangerX>>

I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of an Ancient Practice called "Sin Eating"? I think it was done in the middle ages. When a person died, the family layed out the body on a table and made a feast around it with the best food money could buy. Then they would find a poor unfortunate starving person to come and eat the food. By doing this the poor "Sin Eater" would take on the sins of the dead person.

Date: 12/14/2002 9:55:00 AM  From Authorid: 59163    i remember seeing something on tv about this, where someone would have to eat off of the dead persons chest. usually the son off the father. and one guy was really horrible and i think the son refused but i dont remember how it ended. i think someone ended up eating off of him. *dagon*
Date: 12/14/2002 10:43:00 AM  From Authorid: 12341    I remember an episode of The Twilight Zone, Richard Thomas being the sin eater, I think. Long time back, I also remember my Grandpa mentioning this one time. I don't know the origin or where it came from.
Date: 12/14/2002 10:50:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 61901    I saw the same show, but I also read the practice was based on fact, so was just interested in finding out more about the origin. RangerX
Date: 12/14/2002 11:17:00 AM  From Authorid: 30986    nope, I've never heard of it. I don't doubt it actually happened though. People have done some stupid stuff to try and absolve themselves. It's like hey, I'll party and do everything and then when I croak someone can sprinkle magick pixie dust on me and POOF I'm floating in the clouds with my little harp singing about la-la land. Cracks me up. Interesting post, thanks for sharing.

Date: 12/14/2002 1:57:00 PM  From Authorid: 28946    I think I've heard about this on one of the Discovery channels. I suppose for eons that the family of passed loved ones tried to gain salvation even after death for them whatever the belief. Good post.
Date: 12/14/2002 8:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 48812    yeah, i've heard of it....sometimes they would take the blind and/or crippled, figuring "hey, you're screwed anyway, what's a little more?", and so that blind/crippled person would be taken to the funerals and be forced to eat the food so the dead person could get into heaven unburdened. I heard that in some areas they did it until about the 1950s or so.....i could look more up for ya, if ya wanted.....
Date: 12/14/2002 11:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 55967    Wow. I heard of a lot, but not of this before. And LMAO at Uber Soldat. You are too funny. You are going to make a great soldier someday. ~GypsyHawk~
