I am so sick of hearing about this. I never thought Lott was a strong majority leader anyway, but all this stink is over nothing. There is virtually nothing in Lotts past that proves he is racist. But there is plenty in Byrds past that proves that he WAS a racist at one time, and he seemed awfully comfortable using the "N" word. I have no Idea why there was such a difference in coverage between the two..I guess it's just the same old double standard. |

All that says to me is I wonder why the people of these states keep electing such bigots and racists. Byrd has actually had to apologize a couple of times for comments he has made but Lott is more in the limelight because of his position as Republican Leader in the House. I don't think dragging out everybody or anybody else who is racist or has made racist remarks justifies Trent Lott. That's just a spin to try to put the focus on somebody else. |

Actually, Lott does have a history of racism. He supported segregation when armed U.S. marshals brought the first black student to the University of Mississippi where he was a student... and ... as head of the Sigma Nu fraternity at Ole Miss, Lott also advocated segregation for frat members. He also voted against expanding the Civil Rights Act, and opposed the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, saying there were other heroes “more deserving". The thing in politics is that they use each other's past history to bring out all the skeletons in each others closets....and then one day it's their turn to have their skeletons exposed. Politics....it's an ugly business. |

Well here we go again. I remember when Jesse Jackson called Jews Hymies. That was OK I guess. I don't advocate bigotry, but I have a feeling this is not really the issue. The real issue is a desperate swarm of Democrats that are latching on to any scandle they can to suck the life out of Republicans. Take that, combine it with a media frenzy desperate for sensationalism and voila..you have a Trent Lott case. |

I agree totally, obviously, but I too, like Kelly, want Trent Lott out. I don't think he's done dill for the Republicans, I want someone like, trying not to be too cliché, J.C. Watts. Young, black and educated, that's the leader for me. Show the Democrats that they are SO the racist party, as is shown by their holding down the African Americans through class warfare. |

The fact is the poverty pimps that make up today's civil rights leaders are totally dedicated to the Democratic Party. It is the same old double standard. Hugo |

This whole thing is so stupid. Don't we have bigger things to worry about then some words (which I feel were meant as a joke) that were spoken at a party. Time they let it go and let the man do his job. |

i dont know, in my opinion the whole matter is stupid. most politicians just follow the current trends to be popular. 50 years from now the 100 year old congress people will probably be talking about how cool pot is and how cloning is the way to go. *dagon* |

The NAACP is a racist organization, just as racist as the KKK. There is the reason. |

Byrd did admit that joining the Klan was a big mistake. Still...they're both idiots to be arguing like a bunch of kids. Aren't we too old to be bickering? I think so. |

I'm not a real fan of Lott, as I think he is out of touch with where the Republican party should go. But this issue is stupid and a non issue. First of all I don't consider his remarks or his actions racist. People (stupid brainwashed people) are so hyper sensitive that ANY remark that dwells on race or ANY stance other than bending over for our so-called civil rights leaders is considered racist. Do I want to live in the inner city? Heck No! I guess that makes me a racist as well. |

When Lott went on BET saying he supported affirmitive action he proven he was a self-serving moron. He has to go for his reactions to his birthday party statements, not the statements themselves. |

I don't know, Hugo. But this issue is ridiculous and just a way to divert people's attention away from the real issues of preemptive strikes in Iraq, detainments of Muslims in LA, releases of prisoners across the country due to budget shortfalls in many states, border disputes between groups patrolling the Mexican border and Bush's administration who want to see amnesty granted, as well as Social Security benefits, and in reality, who really cares what Strom Thurman said in l948, and who really cares what Trent Lott said last week? It's just a bunch of smoke and mirrors, so we won't ask the really important questions, like WHEN DO WE GET OUR RIGHTS BACK? |

I do not know. I, for one, did not think the least bit of Lott's comment. It was not made as any type of reference to race, it was made at a birthday party to make Strom feel good. Not a big deal. I think that his colleagues and the Dems just wanted to see him step down, and that is why it was taken in such a manner. And Jesse? He's just a fool who wants to make mountains out of parking lots... |
