Danny soaked in the bathtub for at least a half-hour. Afterwards, he pulled on the soft pair of flannel pajamas lent to him by Angelo. When he stepped out of the bathroom, he discovered his new roommates talking. About him. But when they laid eyes on him, they quickly stopped and straightened up.
"We were just talking about this current situation," Stanleigh said, his face red with embarrassment.
"I can see why you have trouble trusting me, Stan. After all, you considered me an enemy in high school." Danny stalked over to the small cot that had been set up for him. He laid down upon it and pulled the thick, warm comforter up to his chin. At least his accomodations would be good.
"James did control you," Stanleigh whispered.
"He controlled the whole school! And you know what? If I didn't do as he asked, he'd beat the crap outta me. And it was bad enough paying him every week to be my friend. If I didn't, I had to pay him in other ways. Let him perform torturous rituals upon me. And one of them was to key your car," he said guiltily.
"You keyed his car?" Katie asked.
"I had to or James would get revenge on me," Danny moaned.
"He's just a bully," Stanleigh added.
They were silent for a moment. Stanleigh broke the silence by saying, "Is it just me or does this remind you of seventh grade when we studied Anne Frank?"
Danny let out a hoarse laugh. "Hiding out in a room together from murderous people. Waiting for death's hand to reach us. I understand where you get that theory," he said.
"I wish James never got out of prison. He should go to the electric chair," Katie said.
"Or worse." Stanleigh laid down on the bed. He was wearing only a sleeveless shirt and flannel pajama pants. His arms were tucked under his head.
"If James did come and look for us, where would we go?" Danny asked.
"I'd jump out a window. I'd rather die than have him put his hands on me," Katie said angrily.
Danny turned his head towards the wall. "Can we really trust Angelo to keep us hidden?"
Stanleigh nodded. "I think so. I work with him and he seems honest. I don't think he'd betray us," he said with assurance in his voice.
"I hope you're right, Stanleigh. I hope you're right." Katie laid down, exhausted from all that had happened so far. It wasn't long before the three of them were deep asleep.
