This discussion is for my Christian friends. Let's discuss these two related, but very different terms, conviction and condemnation.
CONVICTION: We often speak of someone in church being "convicted" of their sins. This means that the Spirit of God opens their spiritual eyes and tugs at their conscience about something they are guilty of. Conviction should lead to repentance.
John 8:9 And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.
Bringing this to modern day terms, in the judicial system, if a person is convicted of a crime, it means he has been found guilty...but he is not yet sentenced.
Now, think about the word, CONDEMNATION:
A person might be convicted of a crime in court...found guilty by a jury of his peers, but the judge has to pronounce sentence. That sentence is the guilty person's punishment or condemnation.
Yes, condemnation is judgement. In reference to sin, condemnation is the second death spoken of in the scriptures. So, we see conviction is being found guilty but, condemnation is having the sentence passed on the guilty party.
Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Paul said there is now NO condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus. Even though guilty of past sins, if we put our trust in the Lord, confess those sins and have His blood applied to them, then we have assurance that they have been forgiven and since Jesus Himself already paid the price for us, there will be no death sentence. We are FREE!!
Psalm 103:12 As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.
