WINCHESTER, Va. - A man trying to beat his dog to death with a gun was fatally wounded when it apparently went off accidentally, police said.

Raymond Poore Jr., 43, called his wife at work Thursday and told her that their dog had bitten him and he intended to kill the animal, police Capt. David Sobonya said.

The wife came home about 6 p.m. and found her husband unconscious, with a number of dog bites and scratches. Emergency medical personnel discovered that Poore had been shot. He was pronounced dead at Winchester Medical Center.

Sobonya said Poore must have beaten the 30-pound shar-pei with the gun that went off. He said the stock of the weapon, a combination rifle and shotgun, was broken and there appeared to be blood and dog hair on it.

The dog was in the custody of an animal control officer. Sobonya had no detail on how badly it was injured.

>>>>serves him right..once again i say DIVINE intervention here. i put this in debate because last time it turned into that ---because i'm certainly willing to talk about the issue. the last time, it was a rooster with spikes strapped to his heels, for cockfighting.....got loose and killed his handler. and i say once again, divine intervention and he deserved it.

comments? observations? debate? 8-) and if i have to step out for a moment i will be back to answer all comments.

Date: 1/27/2003 4:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 56293    That guy totally deserved. Not just because he was beating a dog, but because he was messing with a loaded gun. Perhaps if he would have some common sense he would have saved his own life.

Date: 1/27/2003 8:10:00 PM  From Authorid: 39370    He deserved what he got. I dont like animal abuse :( *plus he just wasn't smart if he was messing with a loaded gun*.
Date: 1/27/2003 8:44:00 PM  From Authorid: 47218    Poetic justice. I have a similar antidote (also a true story) from Snopes to share. Pardon me for posting the entire thing, but I find that there's no way to link to it: "Snowball in Hell" Carl Hulsey was determined to turn his white billy goat, Snowball, into a watchdog, whether Snowball wanted to be one or not. To that end, 77-year-old Hulsey, a retired poultry worker from Canton, Georgia, took to beating Snowball with a stick to make him more aggressive. "Pa, this goat's going to kill you if you keep that up," Alma Hulsey warned her husband. She was right.

On 16 May 1991, Hulsey once again approached the goat, brandishing a stick. This time Snowball landed the first blow. The 110-pound goat attacked his tormentor, butting Hulsey in the stomach, twice knocking him down. Hulsey scrambled onto the porch in an effort to get away. The goat bounded up the steps after him. While Alma Hulsey watched, Snowball rammed his master over the edge. Hulsey fell to the ground five feet below and died where he landed. "Blunt trauma to the abdominal cavity," said the coroner. Snowball had ruptured Hulsey's stomach.

As a dangerous animal who might harm another, by rights Snowball should have been put down. Once the goat's story was known, however, the officials who were to decide Snowball's fate were inundated with pleas to spare the creature. More than 500 protesters from around the nation called Cherokee County animal control after it was announced Snowball might be put to death. Many offered to adopt Snowball.

Some even made death threats. "What happens to the goat happens to you," one caller reportedly warned. There was also talk of a bomb being planted if the goat didn't walk.

Snowball got his reprieve. He was turned over to Noah's Ark, a private animal shelter for neglected and abused animals in Locust Grove, a little town south of Atlanta. Four hours after his arrival, he was laid on a kitchen table and neutered, an operation intended to make him less aggressive. He was also rechristened "Snow".

Why this furor over a goat and the seeming lack of concern for the man whose life it had ended? In the small community Hulsey had been part of, he was well and truly mourned. Yet outside that pocket of acquaintance, sentiment ran the other way -- many animal lovers saw a certain divine justice in his fate. He'd brought harm to an animal, and the animal had struck back.

Date: 1/27/2003 9:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 12341    What goes around goes around. He sounds like an idgit! He most probably was bitten by his own dog because he was abusing it. He gets no sympathy from me. Beating a pet with a loaded gun, for what?
Date: 1/27/2003 9:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 12341    I just noticed he actually died from the gun wound, even so, he shouldn't have been beating an animal.
Date: 1/27/2003 10:51:00 PM  From Authorid: 55967    He himself created a tragedy all the way around. ~GypsyHawk~
Date: 1/28/2003 12:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 54111    Crazy, I guess no one told him never play with a loaded gun. Bigdadi9
Date: 1/28/2003 3:35:00 PM  From Authorid: 50435    Good...
Date: 1/28/2003 4:04:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 25828    thanks molly cat..i'm just now getting to read this..in that case i'm glad he got what he deserved. and i'm glad they didn't harm snow. too many times like this the animal is killed..when, they're only defending themselves in the first place.
Date: 1/28/2003 8:17:00 PM  From Authorid: 51070    I was in tears reading this. I'm glad that horrible man was shot and killed; he deserves it!
Date: 1/28/2003 8:20:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 25828    yes creepy freak..i've known a sharpei too, it was the sweetest little dog. i can't imagine beating one with a gun..he deserved it , the man that got killed.
Date: 1/29/2003 7:16:00 PM  From Authorid: 48809    It is a divine law that we will ALWAYS reap what we sow. Someone should have told him.
Date: 1/29/2003 9:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 26452    Serves him right! I have NO sympathy whatsoever for ANYONE who would intentionally harm an animal, they'll get whats comming to them and I hope its bad! It makes me so mad whem people hurt animals...I would say alot more, but I dont think I can with out cussing.
Date: 1/29/2003 9:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 55967    Yea, I agree that it is the worst kind of action to harm an animal, which is only doing what it naturally is inclined to do, while in this case it probably was not even doing anything, both aspects making it innocent. And I, too, love animals. Also, the man needed to be stopped however possible. Thing is people, remember that this was a tragedy the whole way around that the man created. Not only was this dog hurt, but remember, a human life was lost. That should not be forgotten. He was not punished, fined, imprisoned, tortured, or whatever. He is dead. He had loved ones who will suffer. ~GypsyHawk~
Date: 1/30/2003 5:08:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 25828    but see gypsy hawk..there is no punishing for things like this. you can cruelly torture an animal to death and you probably won't even get jail time. if they could all be tortured right back i'd be for it.....but --they can't. so i'm happy it happened, maybe if god intervenes sometimes like this it will make others think twice about beating or torturing a poor little defenseless (compared to our size)..animals. i sometimes wish i believed in hades.
Date: 1/31/2003 2:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 61104    I think these people need to think about the treefold law whatever you put into the universe you get back threefold. They got theirs i guess. *Gothgirl*
Date: 1/31/2003 5:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 47218    I have no sympathy for people who cause their own deaths doing cruel and stupid things. Should we feel sorry for Hitler?
Date: 2/5/2003 5:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 57723    i think thats just weird
Date: 2/9/2003 9:52:00 AM  From Authorid: 51463    i think the bad karma fairy got him, but that's personal opinion. --bootz--
