Puppy Emergency...Freaq

  Author:  6817  Category:(Discussion) Created:(1/28/2003 10:46:00 PM)

My puppy is really good about pooping and peeing outside everytime I take him out. He does it really easy too. Right when I put him down he gets his business over with and want to go back in. I just need some tips on how to keep him from doing it in the floor and making him go to the door or let me know when he needs to potty. What I am asking is how do you house break a puppy?

Whenever they did a no no, we take their noses and put it near their business and say "No". Then we take them outside. When we catch them about to go on the floor, we put them outside. If they keep whining that they want back in, we tell him "no" or whatever and leave them out there for a bit longer. I dunno if that helps or not.
Date: 1/28/2003 10:52:00 PM  From Authorid: 16845    oh boy it's been years since I've done that LOL I honestly don't really remember how. I know we got the training pads for him at night and we put him in the bathroom so if there *was* an accidnet clean up was a breeze....I just really remember taking him out after he ate all the time and eventually had it so we'd just tell him time to go out....and he'd go....*Shrugs* I think that's how we did it LOL
Date: 1/28/2003 10:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 16845    by the training pads I mean those 'sheets' you can get at like the pet stores...you put them on the ground and something about them encourages the dog to do it's business on the sheet..
Date: 1/28/2003 10:56:00 PM  From Authorid: 28946    I put my puppies on a schedule. They went out every two to three hours around the clock and also when they looked like they were sniffing out a spot. It only took a week of consistant training. But I sure wastired from lack of restful sleep. This technique worked for me and my dogs never pee or poop in the house.
Date: 1/28/2003 10:56:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 6817    Ya. I kinda feel bad for putting his lil' nose in it tho becuz I wouldn't like someone to rub my nose in nasty stuff. I was thinking of getting the lil' pads and placing them by the door and when he went to the pad by the door I quickly scoop him up and rush him outside before he poops or pees on me lol.
Date: 1/28/2003 10:57:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 6817    Did you like set an alarm clock to get up and take them out by?
Date: 1/28/2003 11:01:00 PM  From Authorid: 28946    No, I slept with the little beasts and when they started moving around on the bed or crying, I knew I better get them outside fast. Puppies don't like to soil their sleeping place. LOL. As the puppies get older, they can hold their functions better.
Date: 1/28/2003 11:03:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 6817    I am a really hard sleeper lol. I sleep like a rock. I wouldn't be able to tell if he was moving he'd poop in the bed lol.
Date: 1/28/2003 11:12:00 PM  From Authorid: 28946    That's just how it has worked for me but I am a light sleeper, too.
Date: 1/29/2003 12:05:00 AM  From Authorid: 54155    How old is your puppy, =) thats so cute. Ummm... I can suggest this... as annoying as it sounds (and believe me it is when its cold out)... walk your dog to the door... and if he goes out the door..praise him...and then take him out side (if you go by door) and while your going to the door praise him generously (maybe give him some treats) ((do this RIGHT after he eats or drinks ANYTHING))...he'll get the hint. Good luck!
Date: 1/29/2003 2:01:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 6817    He's 8 weeks old I think LoL. He's still so little but I just want to be prepared...I keep him in a box right now hehe but it's roomy for his lil' butt.
Date: 1/29/2003 4:43:00 AM  From Authorid: 54968    What we do with our dog, is right after she eats, we let her go outside until she does her business.
Date: 1/29/2003 7:06:00 AM  From Authorid: 42515    This is what we do for our puppy. We put bells on the backdoor...and trained her to ring the bells when she needs to go out. It works really well.
Date: 1/29/2003 7:25:00 AM  From Authorid: 28946    Short N Sweet mentioned praise your puppy when he does "it" and she is right. The doggie learns faster as it wants to please you and will make the connection faster. I forgot I did that as I still praise the beasts when they go outside for their business. (Excuse me while I bash my cat for biting the mouse wire. Not really bash her. lol.)
Date: 1/29/2003 9:48:00 AM  From Authorid: 943    You keep the puppy in a box just large enough for him to sleep. When you take him out of the box, it's outside until (s)he does his thing. Then it would be safe to play with for a while, then, back to the box. They will not go where they must sleep. Eventually it will understand. Works great!
