What makes teens rebel? ~Lucy Ricardo~

  Author:  39370  Category:(Debate) Created:(2/2/2003 8:01:00 PM)

Hello everyone! :)

I was talking on the phone with my best friend the other day, and we started talking about how teens these days, do some pretty crazy things to rebel. So that gave me the idea for this "Debate".

What do you think makes teens rebel, and do the things they do? Like, getting a tattoo, dyeing their hair a crazy color, going for the "goth" look, etc. What do you think makes them do that? The pressure of school, kids, parents? Because maybe they think it makes them stand out? Or do you think it just their way of expressing themselves?

A lot people say that I'm rebelious because I dyed my hair pink. And I basically just have my own style of everything. Hair, jewelry, clothes, etc. And they think I am like this because my mom and dad are very religous people. I have made it clear to my parents that I despise going to church (yet they still force me most of the time). So alot of people think that I dress and act the way I do because I am trying to (more than less) get back at my parents. But that isnt really true. I didn't just wake up one morning and think "If my parents are going to force me to go to church, then I'm going to get back at them by dyeing my hair pink!!". I do the stuff I do because I enjoy it.

But, what do you think it is that makes teens rebel?

Love, Lucy Ricardo

(Also, just on a side note, sorry if this sounds mostly like rambles. I didn't get much sleep last night lol)

Date: 2/2/2003 8:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 28767    I did wierd stuff just because I wanted to and to also see my parents reactions..I think I rebelled because I hated taking my parents advice. I alsways had to be right lol....But now i know that they usually are right now that im no longer a teen..Peace out... P.S.. Just dont ever shave ur head! hahaha
Date: 2/2/2003 10:19:00 PM  From Authorid: 26452    I think alot of teens just do it because its in style, they like getting reations from people, they like the attention they get, they liked peeving off their parents etc...but not all, I'm not a rebel, I have a pretty good relationship with my mom, I have a bunch of piercings, the tips of my hair dyed blue, and I wear alot of black(no, Im not a goth) and I do it just because I like it, actually, my mom loves my hair dyed like this, she helps my dye it, she likes all my piercings except for my navel ring, she paied for half my pierings, and she wears just as much black as I do.
Date: 2/3/2003 1:24:00 AM  From Authorid: 60018    I rebeled just so that I could prove to my parents that I could. Both of my parents are really smart so outsmarting them gave me something interesting to do. I've basically tried to stop now b/c I realized that I would get in more trouble if I got caught :P
Date: 2/3/2003 5:19:00 AM  From Authorid: 24856    A means of expression....setting themselves apart from anything remotely close to parents, society and the rules. We all have had the experiences.....I believe, I just don't want to grow too old to ever forget.....am a child of the 60's and everyone thought we were doomed
Date: 2/3/2003 6:40:00 AM  From Authorid: 2030    All those sweet, smart kids undergo a chemical imbalance at about age 12 which causes massive brain damage. Since they are in fact still developeing this damage slowly begins to heal itself at about age 17 and will be fully repaired at about age 22.
Date: 2/3/2003 7:21:00 AM  From Authorid: 61928    Kids love attention, and the Real World sucks. Rebellion is an immediate solution for a permanent problem.
Date: 2/3/2003 7:21:00 AM  From Authorid: 61928    Why I capitalized real world I have no idea. I didn't mean the show, I promise. (although that sucks too)
Date: 2/3/2003 9:26:00 AM  From Authorid: 48993    hormones make teens rebel, and the thoughts of; or the desire for independence.
Date: 2/3/2003 10:39:00 AM  From Authorid: 52804    well, i can sorta relate. i've dyed my hair, and i definately have my own unique style when it comes to clothes, but it wasn't really to rebel. it was (and stil is) just for fun. plus my family for the most part was supportive. in fact my mom bought me my first bottle of black nail polish, and my aunt was the one who helped me dye my hair. but since i live with my dad, whose a little more conservative, i've been toneing down my look a bit. which is cool, i mean i respect my dad, and if it's really upsetting him that my hair's an unnatural color, i can wait till i move out and have my own place . -disgruntaled angel-
Date: 2/3/2003 12:04:00 PM  From Authorid: 25438    I think that kids are just trying to identify themselves, seperate from there parents. If you notice most of the time kids that have great parents are the ones who rebel like you mentioned above. Kids with addict parents usually study more to seperate there identity from there parents.
Date: 2/3/2003 5:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 57225    its not always rebeling just to express yourself. some teens want attention, some teens do it because thats who they are
Date: 2/3/2003 7:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 24732    Probably their parents or just being plain stupid. I must not be a normal kid, because I never did anything rebellious. LOL and my parents aren't addicts either.
Date: 2/3/2003 7:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 24924    "Oh, Luuuuuuccccy, jew gaw some s'plainin' too doooooo!" You know what? Teens have been "rebelling" since time began. NOTHING is new under the sun; EVERY era has its FADS. In the 50's it was leather jackets, all black beatnik clothes and duck tail haircuts. The 60's it was tie-dyed, peace-marches, pot and hippies; and the kids of those times are the grandparents of today's teens. Sometimes I'd like these kids who put tattoo's all over their bodies to THINK about what THEY will look like when they are their parents or grandparents age. Do they think it will look cool at 50 or 60 with a hole in their nose or eyebrow; or tattoo's all over the wrinkles? Everyone; all kids THINK.....THEY are different and unique. Take a look at history.....they AREN'T.
Date: 2/3/2003 7:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 24924    Oh, I forgot...he he he...when I was in my 20's, mercy me, I dyed my hair a different color almost every week. I remember the stares and the crazy eye rolls from the "elders"....yeah, it was a real hoot.
Date: 2/3/2003 7:47:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 39370    Lol Thinker. Thanks for the replies everyone
Date: 2/3/2003 9:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 22080    i dress punk and ill admit its the way i am ive always liked the style since i was like 6 and also when i did try to fit in i was socially retarded so i said forget it and went back to my roots and found my place in the world so im not rebelling on purpose at all its the way i am
Date: 2/3/2003 9:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 22080    also i found something on a psych student at an ivy league school i posted it here on the site so ill just post my story http://www.unsolvedmysteries.com/usm323652.html its long but good
Date: 2/3/2003 9:27:00 PM  From Authorid: 22080    and 1 more thing scientist and psycologist(sp?) have proved that you are capable of taking care of yourself at age 16 but the only thing holding back is society
Date: 2/4/2003 9:07:00 PM  From Authorid: 51070    I'm not rebelling - I'm being myself. I wear dark lipstick, I dress weird, and I act weird, but that's just my personality. Besides, being preppy just wasn't me.
Date: 2/5/2003 5:01:00 PM  From Authorid: 57723    I think teens need to be teens I am goth and i love it Its just me and who i am and my boyfriend lives with that
Date: 2/5/2003 5:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 22080    i personally prefer girls who are punk or goth but thats just me
Date: 2/5/2003 6:23:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 39370    Thanks for the replies everyone
Date: 2/6/2003 11:43:00 AM  From Authorid: 24845    I think that it is a combination of changing hormones and a need to "find themselves" at that age your trying to figure out just who you are, what you like, and don't like. Testing boundaries. I think it's just a way of life. Changing from one phase to another.
Date: 2/6/2003 9:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 22080    actually what our brains are doing is rewiring(so ive been told) we try something and if it dont work we try it again till we get it right, which is the reason for rebelling because we try to get out on our own because thats what NATURE is telling us we should be doing
Date: 2/6/2003 9:56:00 PM  From Authorid: 56369    I think its pretty much society evolving. Once upon a time the sight of an ankle would cause a commotion, now the sight of an ankle is not enough, A bit of Thigh and what not is what you need these days lol. It will just keep going and going. Rules are made to be broken right :P ??
Date: 2/7/2003 8:36:00 AM  From Authorid: 17204    I am a teen and this why I believe teens, including myself rebel. The mere fact that they are doing something that someone has deemed "bad." It's a representation of their own free will, their independence, and right to do what they want to do. It's sad that they can't go about in another way because sadly this is what gets them into trouble.
Date: 2/7/2003 7:35:00 PM  From Authorid: 22080    old navy i dont see your point,my parents support my style altho its punk. my mom loves the fact she never knows what im gonna be like every morning so i dont see how im rebelling, the only time i "rebel" is when i feel im being stripped of my rights and/or disrespected
Date: 2/8/2003 6:16:00 PM  From Authorid: 4144    i can tell you exactly why......because they are stinking little brats that think they know everything and think that the parents are stupid and don't even have enough brains to realize that the parents just might know a little more about certain things if for no other reason they have been alive longer and just learned stuff along the way...........hows that for rambling???!! o.k. i'm kidding. i really don't know why they do it. i don't know why i did it either. it's probably just part of growing up!
Date: 2/8/2003 9:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 22080    moma i think you were onto something....EEK! lol, the only thing that parents dont know about is how its like to be a kid today, the times are so different that i know my parents have a hard time sympathize
Date: 7/22/2005 10:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 22308    i rebeled when i was 16 and 17 because i felt tied down from my parents. i felt they were preventing me from doing things that i liked doing with my friends. however i've learned my lesson and now know that doing that got me nowhere at all. lol
