The "KAREN G. PORTER" award for 'excellence in writing':

You know, I would have to wonder if I am the only one to have a nightmare that consists of a plotline, where Unsolved Mysteries Publications vanished. I went to dozens of homes, business's, and other strange places where-ever a computer existed and when I would put in USM, there were only sites for the television show. I have a little vision of each friend that I have here. It's a mental description and some of these people that share thoughts with me- I've gotten real use to having around. These are friends, noone can take away from me, but even better- these are friendships that can't be destroyed by anyone. I am too exhausted in anxiety at the moment, to explain indepth why I feel such passion for this universe we call Unsolved Mysteries- I just do.................

I write things and talk about things, that I've never been able to get out, until I stumbled onto USM. I can write it into a story and there's nobody in this town that will ever piece the puzzle together, but my friends here- I welcome their thoughts and expressions, actually, I treasure them. This is my secret journal and silent therapy, but here, it's like wearing real dark sunglasses. I'm not affraid.......

There are alot of very talented writers here. There are beautiful poems. There are interesting stories. There are tales that we all can relate to and share a chuckle. There is also a high level of creativity here, alot of personality styles. It's the mixture, and the fact that it isn't all smutted up, that does make this place a safe alternative to heroin use (that is a joke), sorry.......

But.......

How about the wonderful and kind people that do read what USM writers post, then take the time to say something real nice or very encouraging and motivating? How about Keepsake Quotes, that seem to mysteriously pop up at the exact time they're needed? Some USM'ers are so unselfish and only interested in giving, as well as picking others up. These are friends that always seem to be there beside me, whether I'm having a bad day or a bad dream. I can ramble like a complete and "utter" *(indiana word?) idiot, about things noone could possibly be interested in. There's always gonna be some of my friends here that will leave a message, telling me I did a good job. It is truly amazing.......

I was touched by the amount of people that was affected by the strength that Karen posessed. She is the equivalent of a USM HERO, so many people here loved her. She amazed everyone with her fight and it's always the ones with nothing to gripe about, that gripe the most (meaning myself)- Angels like Karen Porter don't complain. She even picked others up, probably at times when she was on the ropes. We should never forget that she was in reality, what this site is about. Sharing and knowing when to say "it's going to be okay". I would love to see an award, called the KAREN G. PORTER 'excellence in writing', with the winner's name going under hers on a scholarship for someone who wants to go to school but can't afford to. That is the spirit of Karen's nature. Imagine being the one writer, that wins this award and the honor that writer would feel, knowing they represented Unsolved Mysteries Publications in the memory of Karen Porter..................

May the families of the crew members that perished in the Columbia tragedy, be in our thoughts and our prayers.

peace & love: tomevans/

Date: 2/4/2003 11:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 30229    tomevans, what a wonderful idea and I hope they hear it!!! Karen Gail Porter was my SisANGELwiththesamemiddlename, and I loved her dearly. You have NO idea how much strength she had ... I could FEEL it with each email and each telephone conversation she and I had. She was the "rock" of her family during her illness, her real-life family and her USM family... I miss her so much I havent been on USM too much lately because I get so sad when I do come here and see she isnt here Your post had a "pick-me-up" in it for me tonight because you have such an excellant suggestion!!! I love it! Thank you so much for suggesting it and the possibilities here are endless... the Karen Gail Porter Award of LOVE, the Karen Gail Porter Award of Poetry, the Karen Gail Porter Debate Award, the Karen Gail Porter UNDERSTANDING award, and the Karen Gail Porter STRENGTH and VALOR award! Thanks for letting me get a few emotions out tonight talking about her...
Date: 2/4/2003 11:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 47699    Tom, I agree with you, my friend. By the way, it's great to see you. It's been a while.
Date: 2/5/2003 4:07:00 AM  From Authorid: 28946    Tom, I really do think that would be a great thing. A scholarship award/fund. Karen posted about going to college and a scholarship fund would keep her memory alive.
Date: 2/5/2003 5:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 18103    I have to say EXCELLENT idea! Karen was a lovely lady and a dear friend. To have an award named after her would be fantastic. Thanks for putting this post up. It just shows Karen touched many people here.

Date: 2/5/2003 2:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 34775    Karen was the one who bolstered my creativity when I was new here and knew no one. Here were my lonely little poems, with no comments and no appreciation until Karen decided to comment...and bring Agent Smith along for the ride. I pride myself on being a "USM poet" now and I have more than 300 poems here on USM...all which became from the creative nourishment that I found here and the welcome that it got from sweet Thunderhead. What better thing is there to do than to bolster and foster one another's creativity? That is what she did for me. That is what I try to do for others.
Date: 2/5/2003 2:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 35160    oh my bro tom, what a beautiful way 2 honor karen. lovely post sweety. 8^) huge huggs shay

Date: 2/5/2003 3:27:00 PM  From Authorid: 27583    HI TOMEVANS , nice to meet you. you have a great idea here. Karen or should i say Thunderhead as i knew her by was in fact the one to set the bar higher than anyone i have ever known. she lived life for what it was and as you so nicely phrased it never used the woe is me card. she is someone who showed me the way to live and the way to leave a memory to be proud of . in loving memory i found a safe place to keep her , all i ever have to do is search my heart and mind and she will never be more than a loving thought away. thank you tomevans. wooden nickel
Date: 2/5/2003 3:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 21435    Hello Tom Evans. I liked Thunderhead for so many reasons. I think your idea is a good one. Besides being a kind, loving and patient person, Karen was very learned and a "wicked good" writer. She could always hold my attention and that's kinda hard to do..lol..Anyway, I think an award like that would be great. Write on....
Date: 2/5/2003 3:34:00 PM  From Authorid: 15400    I think that is an awsome idea. =D
Date: 2/5/2003 3:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 46486    Wonderful idea!

Date: 2/5/2003 5:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 11097    This post really did have alot of wonderful meaning put into it, and I hope that the award becomes a reality and that it is given to those who know the true meaning of love, compassion, and strength as Karen did and still does. Writing here we share our most inner thoughts, I to love usm for this, great one!! })i({ Luvz
Date: 2/5/2003 5:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 20750    What a great idea! *nods*
Date: 2/5/2003 5:56:00 PM  From Authorid: 38683    Tomevans this is truly a wonderful idea.
Date: 2/5/2003 6:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 19586    What a beautiful way to keep Karens spirit always with us here. It could be a quarterly award given to a USMer. The award could be given by Ginger or Radman. There are so many directions this could take as suggested by Gail. Maybe the USM committee could take this into consideration as a way to boost morale around the USM world....
Date: 2/5/2003 6:37:00 PM  From Authorid: 43586    ^_^
Date: 2/5/2003 7:01:00 PM  From Authorid: 3263    So, it would be a monetary (I hope that's the right word!) award?...I like the idea of an award in Karen's name, but who would fund this? Would it come from donations? The USM Fund? My original thought when I saw this post, was an award like the ones on profiles...
Date: 2/5/2003 7:07:00 PM  From Authorid: 51173    I second the motion. Peace, Tom
Date: 2/5/2003 7:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 53836    this is an awesome idea, and I think there are plenty of USMers here that feel the same exact way as you do about USM and Karen, a heroine (that's right, isn't it? female hero, not the white horse? LOL) ANYhow, bravo for voicing this idea!
Date: 2/5/2003 7:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 42945    excellent post Tom.....cheers Zema
Date: 2/5/2003 9:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 3642    Tom , Hey You there Is a feeling That rises To my chest when I Think of certain people , Its a Strange Thing one thats not easy To explain ...but Its like They have a message That burns Inside Of Them ,One I can feel deep In My chest but cant quite understand ...They give Off a certain feeling of strength , noble truth , They carry a message to The world One act of kindness at a Time ..like the parables some Times Hidden some Times not ....You are one of Those people , Like Karen ... Date: 2/6/2003 3:32:00 AM  From Authorid: 177    How about raising money for starting USM Ghost Hunting chapters. There could be one for every state. I already know of 4 haunted locations here in Washington State. The funds could help with transportation, equipment and Lodging if neccesarry.
Date: 2/6/2003 3:38:00 AM  From Authorid: 177    ...also besides the four locations I mentiond: The Burnley Art School on Seattle's Capitol Hill, and The Harvard Exit Theatre also on Capitol Hill. Then there is the Historical Museum located in Kent which has recently gained some attention for it's alleged paranormal activities. An a little further distant is Manresa Castle in Port Townshend, which experiences many spooking things.
Sooooo, what think you all?

Date: 2/6/2003 6:39:00 AM  From Authorid: 56293    That is an excellent idea and a wonderful post!
