"Now tell me these are not the most beautiful roses you have ever seen!" Alisha gasped holding her bouquet close to her chest burying her nose into them.
"Oh, they are beautiful." Mia smiled back. "In fact, they are exquisite." Their crisp stems of luscious dark green, free of thorns. Their fleshy blood red heads shaped to perfection. Tears of water clinging to the silk petals. Not to mention the aroma dancing across the room to an unheard melody. Alisha put them in her best vase and set them on a table. She turned toward Mia and placed her hands on her hips.
"So did you get anything for Valentines day?"
"Of course."
"Really, what?" Alisha had a harsh stare in her eyes, daring Mia to even try to match her perfect roses. Mia took out a small box and opened it slowly and handed it to Alisha.
"What on earth is this?!" Alisha scoffed "This can't be your valentine present."
"Yes, it is. It's my rose." Alisha picked it up the gift. The rose was of glass. Its stem was full of thrones. Many chipped and scratched. The petals full with spider webbed cracks. Alisha stared at it in amazement.
"How could you like such a thing?" She jeered, turning it in her hand. Mia took it back into her hands.
"How could I not be thankful for such a thing?" Mia smiled and looked down at it. Set next to Alisha's roses it seemed to shame itself with a shudder in the suns light, but to her it was precious. "It's the best gift I've ever received." Mia put it back in its box and looked up at Alishia. "I must be going, happy Valentines day."
"You too." Alisha said as Mia walked out of the door. She turned toward her flowers and sat down. Poor Mia, Alsiha thought. she doesn't understand how ripped off she was. I bet that wasn't even worth a quarter! How could she find such a gift attractive? Alisha shrugged off her thought and set back to thinking about her own gift and went about her day.
Mia unlocked her door and put her things on the floor. All accept her gift. She took it out slowly, and rapped it in tissue paper. Then she placed it on the desk next to her picture, along with many other trinkets. Today was a very interesting day. She thought to herself. Then again...what day isn't?
"Hello Alisha's how are things, how are you?" Mia shifted the phone to her other ear. It had been one week since she had talk to her friend. Mia leaned on the chair next to her.
"I'm good and things are going well." Alsiha answered back, her voice a little distracted.
"Great...How are your roses?"
"Oh Mia" Alisha laughed "You know they are dead." She said plainly. "All roses die after valentines day." Mia smiled and looked down at her gift rapped in tissue paper and set on the desk.
"Oh...not all roses." She picked it up and turned it in her hand. "Glass roses never wilt."
