The Stone Warm To Touch
Upon a time long, long ago a wise man, I've been told Spoke to his young disciple this parable of gold. He said you must look for the stone that's always warm to touch And keep it with you always. For you'll find it's worth is such That all of your endeavors will then meet with success And much wealth and great treasure it will help you to amass. The disciple then went on his way, the whole of earth to treck. And every stone upon his path he took time to inspect. He lifted each rock from the ground and in his hand would hold, Feel it for warmth and toss away each time he felt it cold. From day to day, from month to month, and yea from year to year He journeyed on from town to town, his objective quite clear. Picking pebbles from the ground and tossing them away A repetitious habit done by rote from day to day. And after many years had passed he walked along a shore Picked up a stone and tossed it out as he had done before. Then in that awful instant that he realized what was done He fell to earth now weeping for the stone was truly warm. By repetitious memory and action without thought, He had thrown into the water the treasure he had sought. With weeping and with wailing, and a sorrow beyond ken, No longer young and able to start his quest again. He wandered off, I know not where, nor how his life would end.
