Torture-Ever Justified?

  Author:  15070  Category:(Debate) Created:(3/7/2003 8:07:00 PM)

******Think Khalid Shaikh Mohammed and duct tape. Imagine, the same roll of duct tape purchaced for windows & doors in case of bio-attack all the fun you could have with that duct tape properly applied to Khalid Shaikh Mohammed. It would be up there with bubble wrap for entertainment, you know?*****

Torture: everything from sleep deprevation, to food depravation, the list is long, and open to intrepretation. I am not talking about "PG-rated" annoyances. I am talking the most animalistic, medievel bad-beyond-belief torture.

Is torture EVER justified? To obtain informaion? To punish evil men? To get information which can result in SAVING the lives of innocents?

1) if the U.S.knows someone is in ANOTHER country, being tortured, but we want information from the prisoner too, should we interceed to stop the torture? Why? or Why Not?

2) should U.S. agents ever participate in torture? Even if it would provide information that can save YOUR life & the life of those you love?

3) should the U.S. (or Canada) trade & have a financial interest in a country that uses torture? Why? or Why Not?

Me? I would like to take the high road & say "I think torture is wrong.....blah, blah....", but, I THINK WE ARE AT WAR. AND AT WAR-WE MUST DO WHATEVER WE CAN TO PROTECT AMERICAN CITZENS, even at the cost of someone elses comfort, if they are an enemy.

What do you think?

Date: 3/7/2003 9:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 61901    War is an ugly thing. But, whatever it takes to protect American lives, I am all for it!
Date: 3/7/2003 9:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 37900    It seems to me that in the vast majority of cases, torture is not needed. Few men have the strength of will to resist sensory annoyances or deprivation. IMO, it's not torture to allow a prisoner four non-consecutive hours of sleep per day, or to interrogate them repeatedly to corroborate information, or to feed them the same meal for days at a time. Minor inconveniences, such as dripping water on the forehead, can have profound psychological impact over time. Brutality is therefore not needed. Is it torture if a harmless activity is repeated numerous times? In such cases, isn't torture more a matter of perception than intent? Good post!
Date: 3/7/2003 10:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 22080    i think torture is justified when you bomb your fellow man killing oh about 2000 of them
Date: 3/8/2003 4:02:00 AM  From Authorid: 27950    I agree war is a terrible thing, I would say that if millions of lives were at stake and information was definitely known by someone that could save those lives, do it.

Date: 3/8/2003 7:13:00 AM  From Authorid: 47699    It was in the news just yesterday. Two suspected Al Quaeda members have died while being held for interrogation by the U.S. and our allies. The article I read seemed to say that they were beaten to death. I don't think anybody really likes the idea of having to do things that way but we must do what needs to be done to stop our enemies.
Date: 3/8/2003 1:09:00 PM  From Authorid: 24845    Torture isn't killing them. (even though those enduring it may pray for death) I think that it's ok to use it if you may save the lives of many others. War is an awful thing, it's never pretty. The thing is to save lives you sometimes have to do some undesirable things. In my opinion, to save the lives of Americans and other human life you can use what ever means nessesary.
Date: 3/10/2003 12:31:00 AM  From Authorid: 37073    Torture them!
Date: 3/10/2003 8:24:00 AM  From Authorid: 54532    Um torture them but not phyically.
Date: 3/10/2003 5:44:00 PM  From Authorid: 21867    Interesting...torture and kill suspected Terrorists and its all "oh well, its for the greater good". Yet when one of your enemies does it, its all "See, see what monsters they are". To modify a quote from Apocalyse Now: "Ahhh...I love the smell of hypocracy in the morning". Peace,
Date: 3/14/2003 9:39:00 AM  From Authorid: 24732    Yes in some cases I do think torture is justified, goes right along that in some cases murder is justified.
Date: 3/14/2003 12:26:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15070    please, Agent Smith, be nice. I am not a hypocrite. I am a Mother & a Grandma, who wants to be safe in her own home.
Date: 3/14/2003 8:09:00 PM  From Authorid: 24732    I don't remember any of our enemies ever torturing to save lives? But if they did I guess it would be justified too.
Date: 3/14/2003 8:56:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15070    if, they ever needed to torture an American to save civilian lives, than yes.......

Date: 3/15/2003 6:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 19613    No, to the question of the post. Simply no. Not ever. Torture one monster and you end up with two.
