About ten years ago, back in the Old Days on internet, I was busy logging onto bulletin boards and had a scary experience.
In the old days of computers there was no full-color 'Net, there were just a lot of bulletin boards which people ran on their computers. So, you had to literally log in to someone else's machine. I was bright and eager, and happily jumping onto bulletin boards all over the country via a list of phone numbers I'd found in a computing magazine. What I discovered, though, was that a lot of people didn't leave their computers logged in; they also tended to run them on their own phone lines, and not one dimply for their computer. So, I hit upon a solution: I'd have my modem dial the computer, and then I'd switch on my cordless phone. If a person answered, then I could tell them why I was calling. If the computer answered, all I had to do was switch off my phone, and let the computers talk.
However, what happened next was really bad! All of a sudden, people were talking; no, not talking, arguing! "If you'd pay more attention to me, instead of her, we wouldn't be here right now!"
"I'm telling you, she's starting to catch on."
Apparently, the owner of the bulletin board was on the phone, but for some reason, my incoming signal was patched into his conversation! I was so scared, I couldn't move; I just hung there for five minutes listening to a man who was cheating on his wife, try to explain to his girlfriend why he couldn't see her as much anymore. The girlfriend was talking about getting her brother to kill the wife! I was so stunned, I was hardly breathing! "He's got a shotgun he can use!" she said nastily.
"Are you crazy?" the husband said, "We can't do that!"
Finally, I moved my mouse and hit the button to terminate my computer's call. The modem (good old 2400 baud rate!) severed the connection, but my cordless phone was still on! A click sounded through the connection, and the mistress barked, "What was that! Who have you got listening in?!"
Frightened, I shut off the phone and sat there at my computer desk, breathing really hard. Then, I had a thought: what if the reason that happened was that he left his computer on, but was using his phone at the same time, like me? Did his computer have a log of all incoming calls? Was my number displayed? I didn't use my modem for three days, and I kept watch for any suspicious murders. I've since forgotten where that Bulletin Board was, but I've never forgotten that intercepted conversation--or murder and deceit!
