I passed away on the 13th day of October, on a cold, rainy, Autumn day in the year 1953. All the people claiming to have died and lived again are right in what they claim they saw and experienced. You do pass through a tunnel with a light at the end of it and all the love and peace that you feel can't be explained, it can only be experienced. As I journeyed down the tunnel, I saw my old friends and relatives. Ones that had passed on years before me, each reaching out to greet and welcome me, guiding me on my way. As I moved, in what seemed like slow motion, I can remember thinking, “I made it, I am going to heaven!” I couldn’t quiet figure out why or how though, I never much passed through the church doors. Only on a rare occasion, when some ole snippy widow woman would come my way and drag me there using the pretense of a home cooked meal, that would work every time, but don’t get me wrong, I believed in my Lord and He and I use to chaw a lot , I just weren’t cotton to going inside a building, with lots of other folks so I could talk to Him. No sireeeeee, the Lord and I did our best talking, while I was sitting on a river bank, catching catfish with a cane pole my granddaddy made for me when I was just a boy.
As I reached the Pearly Gates, I was approached by the Gate Keeper. He motioned me through and the Book of Life appeared before me, opening to the chapters of my life. As we were going over all the details, it seemed as though I hadn’t been quiet as good as I thought I had been. I would be allowed to enter heaven, but before becoming and Angel, I had to return to earth to earn my wings. After very careful consideration, the Gate Keeper decided that I would return to earth as a Guardian Angel to protect a child that had been born at the precise moment I had died. I never had children of my own while I was alive and here he was telling me that not only was I to look after this child, but I also had to stay alert and ensure that no harm came to this child. Now I have to tell you, while I was alive, I was a crusty ole bachelor, completely set in my ways and I liked it that way. Never wanted to be bothered with kids or a wife hanging around. I asked the Gate Keeper how long this task would last and he told me that I would know. Not how, when, or where, just that I would know when the time came.
The child was a girl named Jessica. Prettiest little thing you ever wanted to see. Hair jet black hair like Raven’s wings and eyes as blue as the sky after a spring rain, and the smile of an Angel or as I would later discover, the smile of an Imp. I was allowed to peek into the future and get some idea of what I was up against, but after seeing and knowing what I was in store for, I wasn’t prepared for the events that actually followed. The Gate Keeper supplied me with a special bag containing three miracles, told me to choose with care when and how I used them, because there were only three and there would be no more.
He then sent me back on my way down the tunnel. As I journeyed back to earth, I felt such a morbid sadness and a great sense of loss. As I passed by each friend and relative they waved me bye and I could feel the wetness on my cheeks as tears started to roll. I couldn’t ever remember feeling such am impact or loss.
Jessica’s childhood was not typical. Tarnation, this child good get herself into a whole passel of trouble. I remember once when she was four, she had gone to visit her grandparents in the country. Now I didn’t mind being there, I love the peace and quiet of the country, with all the farm animals. Funny thing I discovered, no person could see me, but all the animals could and they would let me pet them, that was something I had never experienced while alive.
On Sunday morning she went to church with her grandparents and during the service, she had to go to the outhouse behind the old country church. While she was in there, being her own little inquisitive self, she found a bug to entertain her, however, the bug turned out to be a poisonous spider and a jumper at that. It jumped on her tiny leg and bit her. She left the outhouse screaming to the top of her lungs for all to hear. Her grandparents came running out of the church to see what was going on. She tried to explain about the “bug”;, but her grandparents felt she had only been stung by a bee. I, in fact, knew she had been bitten by a very poisonous spider.
Later that evening, her leg started to swell and she developed a very high fever that brought on hallucinations, her grandparents found her sitting at the kitchen table screaming that wild horses were after her. They gave her some aspirins and sent her to bed. Her grandparents weren’t unfeeling people, in fact, they loved Jessica dearly, they just weren’t aware of the seriousness of what was happening. I knew, boy did I know! I knew that if she was going to make it through the night it would take a miracle and it was at this point that I remembered the bag of miracles the Gate Keeper had given to me. I opened the bag and was knocked backwards. Now I tell you, I am a big man and that fall hurt. I might have no longer been in human form, but ouch, I could still feel it when I landed on my backside. The power that bag contained, was overwhelming even for me. After that I was a little hesitant to put my hand inside the bag, but time was of the essence and not only was it my job to protect Jessica, but I had also grown very fond of the little girl. So I sucked in my fear and stuck my hand into the bag. All I found was three tiny marbles, I took them out and looked at each and was thinking, I had been tricked! No sooner did I have the thought, when one of the marbles started to rise up in the air and began to twirl and swirl all over that room. I was awe stuck and amazed. Finally the marble was hovering right above Jessica and it burst into a brilliant powder like substance and twinkled like diamonds. The powder, very slowly, floated down and enveloped Jessica’s entire body and she glowed. I just sat in bewilderment and watched the power of God. Although Jessica couldn’t see or hear me, I sometimes felt she could feel my presence close. I watched as she looked up and just smiled. I feel to my knees and praised the Lord for His mighty blessing and power.
By the next morning, the swelling in Jessica’s leg had subsided and the fever was gone, she would be fine this time.
Have mercy how this child kept me on my toes and on full alert all the time. It was a good thing, I wasn’t in my ole body from before when I passed on. I would have never made it. Jessica’s childhood was petty typical after that until she was about 6 years old. Her father was a policeman and he and his brother use to go to the gun range on Sundays to practice their shooting abilities. One Sunday they decided to let Jessica go with them. I slapped my head and though, “Oh noooooooooooooooooooo, not a good thing!” I certainly didn’t want my Jessica around a bunch of shooting. Yes, by this time she had become my Jessica.
At first, Jessica found it all to be very exciting, but after a short time, she became restless and bored. With Jessica that is your first warning of impending danger. Not succeeding in getting the attention that she craved from her dad and her uncle, she began to wander and explore. She came across a great treasure which she though was a bed of worms, which in fact, was a bed of baby rattle snakes. Knowing her as I did by this time, I knew she would just have to pick one up. I was at a loss being totally invisible and unheard to her dad and uncle. I was down to two miracles in the bag and knew I had many years to go, so I thought I would try for once to be heard. I got real close to her uncle’s ear and screamed as loud as I could, “Turn around, look for Jessica...do it NOW!!!” With a stunned look on his face, he did just that and immediately evaluated the situation and shot right under Jessica’s hand and scattered them snakes from here to kingdom come. Jessica was startled and
