A Question for anyone that knows anything about hair coloring!

Ok. For about a year I have been bleaching and toning my hair to be blonde. And it looked pretty good. But I was getting sick of the up keep my hair grows really fast and I was having to touch up the roots constantly. So I decided to dye my hair a light brown color, that closely matched my natural color (even though I didn't want to use harsh dyes, but I couldn't wait for it to grow out, because it would of looked terrible while doing so) So ANYWAYS I got a light color because I didn't want it to turn out to terribly dark. So I used a shade called 'light brown' by Wella (it wasn't a common brand, but it looked good, and I had read some good reviews about it being gentle for hair, so I used it.) Well my hair is shiny, but it is really dark, it is a very dark shade of brown. (Way darker than my natural color) Now my question isn't how to get it lighter, because I don't want to chemically alter my hair anymore, so I am just going to let it grow out and keep cutting it until it's my natural color. But If you know anything about coloring hair, maybe you can tell me what happened, why did it have such an intense result? ........

Date: 3/20/2003 9:47:00 PM  From Authorid: 57232    A lot of times on the side of the box, sort of their little "fine print" it will say that the box's color is not an indication of what will be, it will have an index of hair colors and then say for instance "IF you hair is Strawberry Blonde the results will be darker actually a chestnt brown" or something to that effect. I'm not a whiz on the dyes myself, but I do know if you wash your hair a little bit more than you usually do, like maybe wash it twice while in the shower, it'll lighten up a bit. If you want to maybe "Sun-In" and a blow dryer can help. But if you dye your hair a blonde again, try to stay away from ones w/ the word Ash in it as it will dull your hair in color.
Date: 3/20/2003 9:53:00 PM  From Authorid: 11721    honey i think your best bet is to go to a professional honestly (my mom does hair and this is how i know) because you keep putting the wrong stuff on it you could end up with like green hair! and it's not good for it either the chemcials damage it and btw wella is a good product you just have to know how to do the colors....
Date: 3/20/2003 10:08:00 PM  From Authorid: 20750    whoa! I have no clue! I would go to a pro! I had a friend that died her her so many times it turned green! I just don't know!
Date: 3/21/2003 12:57:00 AM  From Authorid: 55755    When I did my hair too dark, a friend of mine suggested using Dawn dishsoap in it. I guess there is something in the chemical makeup that acts as a stripping tool for hair. It did work, too. But I think if the dye has been in too long ( a week or more) then it wont work.

Date: 3/21/2003 1:55:00 AM  From Authorid: 13897    well cause you bleached your hair.. it makes it prety light. well, just wait until it fades.. usually hair colors fade ...i know my red does! it'll get lighter eventually.. =)
Date: 3/21/2003 4:10:00 AM  From Authorid: 46069    well.. from a profeswional point of view... and i personally love the wella products... was it Presentation that you used?.. the semi permanent(035).. if you have been lightening and toning your hair that long.. it would be pretty porous.... so i has absorbed alot of the colour... after some washing it will start to lighten a bit( that is if that is the product you used).. also it will look so much darker to you becuase you are used to seeing it so light... adding anything darker will appear to be drastic....
Date: 3/21/2003 5:23:00 AM  From Authorid: 23610    Sk8tr is right....because you color your hair....it is more porous. So...then when you put a color on it like you did...it really "grabs" the color into the pores. I usually use a shade that is something like two shades lighter than what I really want....because my hair grabs color too and ends up too dark if I am using the same color that I am trying to get my hair to look like. Wella is pretty good....so it's not the product that caused it....you just have porous hair.
Date: 3/22/2003 10:32:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 30401    I'll try the dawn dish soap:) thanks StarFire
Date: 3/22/2003 10:32:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 30401    i used the permanent type....but hopefully it will lighten up...when i took a bath last night...the water was a wierd color so i think that some of the dye came out.
