WEEKLY WORLD NEWS:
New Orleans- A voracious plague of alien termites is chewing it's way throughout the united states- and no home is safe, warn top scientists!
Unstoppable armies of Formosan termites, which arrived in southern ports from East Asia at the end of world war 2 have devastated New Orleans and are now headed north, east and west report researchers with the Agricultural Research Service of the U.S. department of Agriculture.
The Relentless bugs are a horror movie come to life:
1. Their colonies are enormous, often numbering in the millions. As a result they can destroy an entire home or tree in a matter of months.
2.A single colony can consume up to 1,000 pounds of wood per year. In comparison, a single colony of domestic termites consumes just seven pounds.
3. They don't eat just wood. Forsoman termites routinely penetrate cement, brick, plastic, concrete, and even metal to get to food or water inside. When thirsty, they have even been known to chew through high-pressure water lines.
4. A queen termite can lay up to 3,000 eggs a day, ensuring the survival of a colony for decades.
But most frightening of all, established Forsoman termite colonies are nearly impossible to destroy, say entomologists. Colonies often have tunnels extending hundreds of feet in all directions- and the clever bugs simply move above ground when subjected to traditional underground pesticide treatments.
Notes one frantic report from the Agricultural Research Service: "Eradication is not a likely scenario.
