Now that winter is gone, Shadow Walker and I have begun our amateur ghost hunting again. Last weekend we loaded up the car with all our "ghost hunting" equipment and went to an 18th century fort not too far from here on the banks of Lake Ontario. Aptly named Fort Ontario.
The fort was orginally built by the british in the 1700's and has been used in every major war since the French and Indian war. It was even used in WW11 as a safe haven for Holocaust survivors. So the place has alot of history. The fortress surronding the living spaces is made of concrete, stone and earth with walls about 15 feet high. After going through a tunnel, you come out to the wide open space of what is the interior of the fort. Here there are two stone houses that were uses as officers quarters, one long enlisted mens barracks, another stone building that housed the stockade and offices and two senturies posts. All of these buildings are situated in a circle around the fort with what is called the parade ground in the middle. There are also underground tunnels and case mates. A case mate is an underground room with another room that was used to store gun powder. These rooms also have slits in the concrete and stone walls where the military shot their muskits safely to the outside in order to protect the fort. The fort is well maintained and restored.
Shadow Walker and I had been there before but only as tourists. This time we went as ghost hunters. We were fortunate that we were the only ones there at the time, except for a handful of fort guides dressed in civil war outfits. At least I think they were all guides. *smiles* I went about video taping everything I could and taking pictures of the buildings etc. My only hope was that something would come out in them that I wasn't seeing. Although it felt creepy at times to be exploring the past so itimately, I did not see anything unusual in these buildings and in fact, nothing did come out on video or in pictures. But I got all the proof I needed in other ways.
The last thing we did was investigate the underground case mates. Well, we only made it through two of them. (there are 4) The first one kind of freaked me out. Not that I saw anything but it was the kind of place that just didn't "feel" right. To get to it you have to climb and embankment and go down deep steps into the earth. The rooms are all concreted. It didn't look like much to me. For some reason the gun powder room scared me a little and I don't scare easily. This room is closed off by a heavy wood and iron door. After leaving this case mate, I decided to take a break while Shadow Walker went on to check out the next one. I sat down in the grass just outside the first case mate and enjoyed the sunshine. That's when I heard the sounds. At first I thought it was Shadow Walker. Maybe he had found some secret undergroud passage from one case mate to the other. Then I realized that was impossible as I had seen for myself that these rooms were completely unpenetrable. The first sound was that of a door being opened. It reverberated up the stairwell. Then I heard unmistakable foot falls. Heavy like with boots. I knew there was no way for anything living to be down there. I had just been there and was sitting outside the only entrance.
This unnerved me a little but I was fascinated at the same time. I literally couldn't move for a few seconds. Then I went to find SW and tell him. He was in the second case mate so I had to go down there. It was basically built just like the first one. This time SW turned on the EVP player and walked away to see if it would pick up any sounds. It wasn't until after we left that we got the big scare of the day.
We ended our investigation and left. SW decided to listen to a little of the EVP and sure enough, there were voices that were not ours. Both of us can be heard talking to each other and then we are silent. In the silence there are two distinct voices that our not anything like ours. They could not even be mistaken for our voices. One is a female speaking softly and the other is a male speaking very loudly. The only thing was...these voices were speaking a foreign language. We both know a little about launguages and determined that it was definitely French. We had to use a translator to figure out what they were saying and the best we can come up with, which I think is quite accurate, is the women is saying "I am proud" and the man is saying "You drank it!" I have no idea what it all means but that is what they said and there was no doubt about that.
Another note: The geiger counter we took with us went off the wall the whole time we were there. Also, I asked the director of the fort if anything strange ever happened there. (knowing from my reading that it is documented as having it's ghosts) The director looked nervous and said "I would have to say that things happened that were odd but..." He would not talk about it. What a shame. I'm sure there are stories he could tell.
