Burial Box Not from Jesus Brother -Israeli Experts Wed June 18, 2003 09:25 AM ET By Corinne Heller

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli archaeological experts said on Wednesday an inscription on an ancient stone box suggesting it once contained the bones of Jesus's brother, James, was a forgery.

The burial box and its Aramaic inscription "James, son of Joseph, brother of Jesus" had excited speculation that it could be the earliest physical reference to the founder of Christianity outside the New Testament.

But the director of Israel's Antiquities Authority, Shuka Dorfman, called it a hoax.

"The ossuary is real. But the inscription is fake. What this means is that somebody took a real box and forged the writing on it, probably to give it a religious significance," Dorfman told Reuters after a news conference on the matter.

James, who was believed to have been stoned to death in 62 A.D., is mentioned in the Gospels as Jesus's brother. Jews and Protestants accept this but Catholics -- who believe Christ's mother Mary was a virgin all her life -- say he was a cousin.

Dr Gideon Avni, the archaeologist who chaired a committee of archaeological experts investigating the find's provenance since March, told reporters the conclusion was unanimous.

The committee concluded that "even if the ossuary is authentic, there is no reason to assume the bones of Jesus's brother were inside," and that the stone of the box was more typical of Cyprus and northern Syria than ancient Israel.

The committee's report said the inscription of the "James Ossuary" cut through the stone's patina, or natural fossilized sheen, and appeared to be in modern text, written by someone attempting to reproduce ancient biblical fonts.

However, the experts could not pinpoint the time when the inscription was forged.

An Israeli antiquities collector bought the ossuary in the 1970s but had no idea of its significance. Last year he invited Andre Lemaire, a renowned French scholar of ancient texts, to examine it. Lemaire concluded the inscription was genuine.

Ossuaries were used by Jews in Jerusalem from 10 B.C. to A.D. 70 to hold skeletal remains of bodies near caves. Many believed that once decomposed, the dead could be resurrected with the coming of the Messiah.

Only a few hundred ossuaries of the thousands unearthed contain inscriptions, reserved for the dead of high status.

Date: 6/18/2003 12:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 25828    i'd read that or something like it, they've been saying for months that it was a hoax and that they had already proven it was a fake - good to see you posting, Enki 8-)

Date: 6/18/2003 1:31:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 11528    Hi Guys, Oooops sorry. I didnt realise this was old news. Today was the first I heard that officials had pronounced it a fake. Take Care. Bye for now. Enki
Date: 6/18/2003 1:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 24924    Also, The names: James, Jesus, Joseph, were very common names back then; so even if the name wasn't forged, How you going to conclude that it was the Jesus or James of the Bible? I've been reading a lot about Israel trying to inhibit or shut down archaelogical sites. They fear finding things that would disprove the Bible; thus putting them on very shaky ground with regard to their claims to the holy land? I saw a program regarding this ossuary, and a writing expert explained of how the name inscription was forged. It was very interesting, and shows such sophisticated modern methods of determining the age of documents and writings and even to what the medium used at the time. Kinda like forensic science does in solving crimes. Good to see you again, Enki. We miss you around here.
Date: 6/18/2003 1:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 3125    I had doubts from the beginning as to the authenticity of the claims. Why some people just don't leave well enough alone is something I cannot understand. There's enough proof in the fact that this world exists to produce faith that God exists. There's enough in God's Word to produce faith. Why bother with all that? Who is trying to prove what to whom? Millions of others have lived and died without having anything other to go on except for God drawing them to His truth. When men steps in and attempts to improve God's perfect plan, all they do is cause confusions and many others to doubt God.

Date: 6/18/2003 6:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 10798    One of my Orthodox Jewish friends, a very brilliant man, told me this several weeks ago. He could tell by looking at the inscription.

Date: 6/19/2003 7:20:00 PM  From Authorid: 28989    Hi, Enki. This was the first time I heard this, too. Somehow I thought it strange that the inscription read "brother of Jesus" instead of "son of Joseph and Mary" or something like that. I don't think it's too common to mention your brother on your epitaph.
Date: 6/24/2003 12:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 12823    Enki! Good to see you! You and Osiris need to get your behinds back to the you-know-where site. :-)
Date: 6/24/2003 12:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 12823    Its seems odd to me that the only ones who appear to be claiming this is a hoax, are the Jews- the ones who would have the most to lose because Jesus blows their whole case of modern Judaism. From what I have read on this post, the Jews are saying it is a fraud, the Gentiles are saying it is authentic. *Shocking* But, I am only going off of this post because this is the first I have heard of it being a fake- just seems supsicious from what I read in this post, the Jews are the ones claiming it is a fraud.

Date: 7/5/2003 8:23:00 AM  From Authorid: 51173    Enki, my friend, I hope things have been well for you. ----------- What we have here is two scholars having a hissy fit with each other. Dorfman and Herschel Shanks, editor of Biblical Archeology Review have a bad history together, as do two other members of Dorfman's team with Shanks. It is interesting that the official report was delayed, and that this report says "The committee concluded that "even if the ossuary is authentic, there is no reason to assume the bones of Jesus's brother were inside," ". WELL, IS IT A FAKE OR NOT? This is significant only in that Dorfman is the first person who has credentials in the necessary relivant fields of study to say it was fake. ALL OTHERS WHO HAVE CLAIMED IT WAS FAKE UP TOP THIS POINT HAVE BEEN SPEAKING FROM OUTSIDE THEIR FIELDS OF STUDY! In short they didn't know what they were talking about; at least Dorfman supposedly does.
Date: 7/5/2003 8:24:00 AM  From Authorid: 51173    Another thing I find interesting is the ones who are saying its real want further study, the ones who say its fake want all study on it stopped. Why?
