Some Things Should Stay A Mystery -- Part 10: "I'm Done Playing" -screen_writer-

Slowly, I made my way back upstairs. I had a feeling who I was going to find in the bedroom. As I took my time walking to my bedroom I began to think about how I started off this tale. About how we can’t recognize the most significant moments in our lives; about how, if these moments are handled correctly your dreams can blossom, and if they were handled irresponsibly can lead your life in a downward spiral. When I bought “The Book”, that was a significant moment in my life, and, of course I didn’t recognize it… I didn’t handle the moment correctly, and now… as I made that long walk up the stairs, I was about to pay for it.

I opened the bedroom door, and lying there on the bed was the red head. Her eyes were as pretty as the first day I saw her in Archie’s, yet this time her eyes didn’t look flirtatious at all, they looked… evil. I was very happy Becky was out of town, out of harms way. But I’ll tell you one thing, when I opened that bedroom door, and saw the red head lying on our bed, I was scared out of my wits; boy I wished I would’ve went with her to her parents house.

“Open the book Paul.” The red head said in a horribly sweet voice.

“Why?” I asked.

“It’s what’s your supposed to do.”

I didn’t say a word, all I could do was stare at this woman; my heart was thumping like a motor in overdrive.

“Where’s your lack of self control when I need it?” She said. Suddenly she laughed out loud. My mind told me, I was standing in this room with a crazy person, and then I reminded myself… this wasn’t a person at all.

She continued, “I thought I would break you down enough, but… I guess I was wrong.” She then shot a deadly glance in my direction – a look that instantly chilled the blood running through my veins – and she said, in a poisonous voice, “Now I demand that you open the book.” She picked it up, and threw it at me. I ducked, and the book flew over my head, hitting the wall behind me, and crashing to the floor.

“Who are you… really?” I asked in a small-frightened voice.

“Some things should stay a mystery, Paul. That’s a phrase you know very little about, isn’t it? You just had to know what the future held for you… you just had to know about your job, about your wife didn’t you? Well, I gave you that opportunity, and now all of a sudden you don’t want to have anything to do with it. You’re really something else Paul.” She said in an almost hurt voice. Her emotions seemed to keep changing, which made this situation a whole bunch more terrifying.

I spoke up in a meek voice, “I didn’t open it because of what you said.”

A mille-second didn’t pass before she was talking again. This time in an angry voice, “When did it ever matter before what I said to you! Answer me that Paul!” She was screaming. I began to back out of the room; back out into the hallway, when suddenly the bedroom door slammed shut on its own. I jumped out of my skin, yet I didn’t turn my back to this crazy woman in front of me. She started pulling her hair, as I was reaching behind myself, feeling around for the doorknob. But the door… was locked.

“Don’t… touch… the… door!” She screamed, as she ripped out some of her hair. I froze. “Fine! Fine… if you don’t want to open the book I’ll do it for you.” She held her hand out, in the direction of the book; it lifted off the floor, and flew across the room into her hand. Once she had the book in her possession she smiled, and looked at me in that flirtations way I remembered from August. The red headed lady scrunched up her nose, and smiled at me. This time she was flirting with me. I thought to myself: ‘what’s wrong with you lady?’

“Nothing’s wrong with me.” She said in a cruel tone. Momentarily, my heart stopped. She had read my mind. “I’m done playing with you. I think you’re worn down enough… I have a proposition for you.”

“Well… I guess I’m listening.” I said in a scared voice.
