I need some weight loss advice

  Author:  15675  Category:(General Advice) Created:(7/10/2003 8:16:00 PM)

Alrighty I'm 5'4, and about 188lbs (I just checked today...) I'm a vegetarian and I have been since I was 9. My family isnt really obese or anything but my mom has fought off a few extra pounds all her life (but she succeeds everytime she exercises a lot.) My highest weight was when I was 5'3, newly 13 years old, and I weighed 210lbs. I was like super depressed and I ate quite a bit (making me now believe I'm an emotional eater.) Well then the next summer I'd taken the eating down a notch for that whole year and I was probably down to 200 or 195lbs and I was about 5'4. I started biking to add to it and I dont know how much weight I lost but I dropped a pants size. Then I exercised all winter on this crappy lil machiene. As a note for time amount I exercised like 90 mins or longer on the bike, and about an hour on the lil machiene every day each. Anyways I dropped another pants size or so and I was at like 195lbs then. Anyways now then I got a new machiene in Feburary and I started exercising for about 45 mins going 3 miles an hour on the treadmill. Then lately I kicked it up to 2 hours same speed. Alls I eat anymore is 1 morningstar (vegetarian) chicken pot pie (350 calories all together), maybe a bowl of unbuttered popcorn, and maybe another morningstar product. So I'm eating sensibly, maybe I should eat more, and Im exercising religiously EVERYDAY! So whats my prob? I've been like 188lbs since Feburary, no gain or loss maybe by a pound or 2 but it always goes back to that and I never seem to loose the weight! And if its muscle how come I'm not dropping pants sizes? I dont have any problems with me apparently cuz I went to the doctor 2 years ago to get blood test (n i had one in like March) and theres nothing wrong with me or thryoids or anything. So what more can I do? What can I change? HELP! Lately I'm at my moms for a week and I'm surronded by junk food and I feel like what the hey might as well eat and screw all this....but it wont last long (I'm leaving Saturday) so what should I do? Thanks.

Date: 7/10/2003 8:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 8905    Just as an FYI, with all the exercising you are doing, you are probably developing some muscle, and one thing thats gets alot of people is that they dont know that muscle weighs more than fat, so when you think you are overweight, your not, you just have a lot of muscle... Also with the pant sizes, muscle fills in the same amount of space as fat would... it can also be your body type, or genetic. I wouldnt worry to much about it, you seem to be in good health, and most likely are a beutiful person, but in the off chance that you are more worried about it, you can see a nutrionlist(i think thats how its spelled) and ask them about it, as well as an instructor at your local gym. Good luck:) PC
Date: 7/10/2003 8:24:00 PM  From Authorid: 8905    One more thing, cause I reread the post to make sure I didnt miss anything, If you dont eat enough, your body wont have the energy to burn off all the fat and calories it is supposed to. Just another piece of advice
Date: 7/10/2003 8:27:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15675    thanks. Alrighty I forgot to add: I only drink water hehe. I have a large frame I do believe and I know for that my healthy weight range should be between 120lbs and 145 or 150lbs. So Im far off...
Date: 7/10/2003 8:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 8905    The weight range is very stereotypical.... Im supposed to be like 150 at my height, which is 5'6 and I am 193, due to the fact that my body is mainly comprised of muscle... I dont go by those charts.... they annoy me....LoL
Date: 7/10/2003 8:29:00 PM  From Authorid: 8278    i am pretty much having the same problem. i excercise and eat better, but i am not getting anywhere. i have cut the fat out and increased my water intake. i am just hoping that helps. i wish you the best, and, if you find anything that works, please let me know :) (hugs)
Date: 7/10/2003 8:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 8905    AND DRINK MORE THAN WATER!!! Orange juice and other fruit juices (the real ones, not from concentrate or artificial) are soe of the best things you can drink. Cranberry especially, it cleans out your system very well, and orange gives you vitamins that you need. Also... are you taking vitamins daily?
Date: 7/10/2003 8:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 50434    This has been working for me, cut out as much carbs as possible and exercise. Im doing the atkins diet. look it up www.atkins.com YOU CAN DO IT. =+)~
Date: 7/10/2003 9:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 35720    No carbs and LOTS of water.. TONS of veggies (stay away from potatoes and corn.. they are CARBS!) TONS of exercise (running is great as are crunches!) I lost 6 pounds in two days (results are NOT typical.. I just put on alot of weight recently and I think that's why so much of it quickly came off.)
Date: 7/11/2003 10:26:00 AM  From Authorid: 53284    There are several theories to weight loss that work. The first is counting calories. You can look up on the internet how many calories per day you should be eating. Then, to lose weight you need to eat 70% of that. If you eat too little, then your body (being an incredibly smart organic machine ) think that you are in the middle of a famine and will do everything that it can to not use any stored resources (fat). If you do the calorie counting method, you should spread out your food so you have five meals per day and you need to drink lots of water. Second diet that works but it takes a long time is rotation. Three days per week you eat very low cal meals. Four days per week you eat a balanced diet. The third way to lose weight is to reduce your carbs. Go to the library and read Atkins book. This may be difficult for you since you are vegan. Just skip the meat and go for the rest. With all diets you need to get lots of exercise (sounds like you've got that covered ) and drink lots of water. Three miles per hour on the treadmill probably isn't enough work to get you into a fat burning zone. You need to get up to 5-6 miles per hour. Speed burns the calories faster. It will take you some time to built up to this speed. Best of luck.
Date: 7/11/2003 2:06:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 15675    thanks everyone. No im not a vegan so like I drink milk when i have to and such :p. I dont eat many carbs except for like the crust on my pie :p. No I don't take vitamins...probably should.
Date: 7/11/2003 5:05:00 PM  From Authorid: 29262    Yo could go on a carb. diet. You look at the carbs on the product if it is 26 carbs or more you cant have it... Or something like that. You could work out too.
Date: 7/12/2003 1:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 49889    I'm a vegetarian too and Im also overweight. But I have some sort of medical problem with my metabolism. I'm 5'6" and I weigh 155lbs. I am an emotional eater, too, so I feel your pain...Whenever I get depressed, I feel like I DESERVE to eat something I enjoy. It's hard to curb the cravings...but I guess its worth it in the end. Just remember, dont take it too far and starve yourself, you could get REALLY sick from that, take my word for it. Always bare in mind that its who you are inside that matters, not what you look like on the outside! Good luck, if you find something that works and is healthy, tell me PRETTY PLEASE! :)LOL
Date: 7/13/2003 2:40:00 PM  From Authorid: 51587    Cut back on sugar..i did and helped alot..and the exericing you do..might not help much....exerice like 15 mins a day for like 5 days a week..that might help alitte. *huggs*
