If theres one thing I hate it's opening up the newspaper to find that some over paid movie critic gave a film I enjoyed a big fat "C". It always seems that they pound on the finest detail of the movie without reviewing the entire movie itself. For example, the author might ramble for 3 paragraphs about why he/she simply HATED the eyeliner worn by the leading woman, but will never actually say whether he/she thought the film was a sucsess or not.
And, to further the point, who cares what the critics say? Of course I value freedom of speech, but some people are just annoying.
For example, I just saw the movie Pirate of the Caribbean: the Curse of the Black Pearl. Now, at first (months before the movie came out in theatres) when I saw the coming attraction for it my opinions weren't that high. To me it looked like a cheesey flop. But as the release date drew nearer my interest increased. As it turned out, I thoroughly enjoyed the film!
But just moments ago I read a review saying that it 'lacked plot, Johnny Depp's acting was horrible, the special effects were desperate and scared children, blah blah blah.'
Now I know that those may very well be someones honest opinion, but no one likes having somethign they enjoyed being dismantaled, over analyzed, dissed, prodded and thrown in a trash heap.
And how do we judge whether or not a movie was 'good or bad'? By the amount of money it made? By the audience that enjoyed it? By the awards it wond? Was it an action flick? Adventure? Romance?
*Sigh* I don't know. It just boils me to read those things. I also think of the actors and director, producers and crew, who (although got paid genorous amounts of money despite this critic's views) worked very hard to bring the movie to life. By making fun of the movie, you are also making fun of someone else's source of incom. This is how somebody feeds their kids. There are money jobs included in making films.
And yeah, ragging on movies is how a critic feeds HIS kids, but still. Can't you find a less annoying career?
