What has he done for you? CoRyAnN

This may be a long post. I am currently reading a book called The Case for Christ. I ran across a chapter in this book I feel I need to share.

Do you know what Jesus suffered for us? All my life I have heard of Jesus dying on the cross. I never really thought about what the entailed until NOW. This may be disturbibg to some.

First comes the "flogging". A flogging consists of about 39 lashes but could be more. Depending on the mood of the soldier. They would use a whip of braided leather thongs with metal balls woven into them. When the whip would strike the flesh, these balls would cause deep bruises or contusions, which would break open with further blows. And the whip had pieces of sharp bone, which would cut the flesh severley. The back would be so shredded that part of the spine would be exposed. The whipping would have gone all way from the shoulders down to the back, the butt, and the back of the legs. As the flogging continued, the lacerations would tear into the underlying skeletal muscles.

We know many people would die from this kind of beating even before they were crucified. At the very least the victim would experience tremendous pain and go into hypovolemic shock. Jesus was most likley in hypuvolemic shock as he staggered up the road to the execution site at Calvary, carring the horizontal beam of the cross. It has been said Jesus collapsed and the Roman soldiers ordered Simon to carry the cross for him.

Because of the serious beatings there's NO question,Jesus was already in serious to critcal condition. Then he was laid down. His hands would have been nailed in the outstretched position to the horizontal beam. The cross bar with is called the patibulum is permently stuck in the ground.

The Romans used spikes that were five to seven inches long and tapered to a sharp point. They were actually driven into the wrists contrary to popular belief. His wieght would have caused the skin to tear and he would have fallen of the cross. But back in those days the wrist was considered part of the hand.

It's important to understand that the nail would go thrugh the place where the median nerve runs. This is the largest nerve going out to the hand, and it would be crushd by the nail that was being pounded in. The sort of pain this would produce would be simaler to hitting your funny bone really hard. Except picture taking a pair of pliers and squeezing and crushing that nerve. That effect would be similar to what Jesus experienced.

The pain was absolutely unbearable. In fact it was literally beyond words. They had to invent a new word. Excruciating. Means "Out of the cross". Think of that. They needed to create a new word, because there was nothing in the language that could describe the intense anguish caused during the crucifixion.

At this point Jesus was hoisted as the crossbar was attached to the vertical stake.and then nails were driven through his feet. Again the nerves in his feet would have been crushed, and there would have been similar type of pain. His arms would have been streched, probably about six inches in lenghth, and both shoulders would have been dislocated.

Once a person is hanging in the vertical position, crucifixion is an agonizingly slow death by asphyxiatin. The stresses on the muscles and diaphram put the chest into the inhaled position. Basically in order to exhale Jesus had to push up on his feet so the tention on the muscles would ease for a moment. In doing so the nail would tear through through the foot eventually locking up against the bones..

After managing to exhale he would then be able to relax down and take another breath in. Again he'd have to push himself up to exhale. Scraping his bloodied back aginst the coarse wood of the cross. This would go on and on until complete exhaustion would take over, and then he wouldn't be able to push up and breathe anymore.

So if you ask yourself what has God ever done for me. I'll tell you what he has done. He has suffered and died for YOU! As I read this I felt so sick and sad! How many times I take Jesus for granted. I never new the full extent of his sufferings. Now I do and I will be forever greatful.

Date: 7/11/2003 4:31:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 30051    Please really think about this.
Date: 7/11/2003 4:33:00 PM  From Authorid: 46530    I am sorry to disagree, but nobody has died for me personally, we only have second or third accounts for this in a book that is over two thousand years old and has been translated so many times, and changed so many times. If he did die for the world then its a good way we are treating it. Dragging its resources out of it and using them all up. Making sure that we are leaving nothing for our children, whose world is so polluted that one in four has a respiratory problem. People dying all over the world needlessly from AIDS, TB, cancer etc. The ozone layer disappearing because one country doesnt want to slow down and find better ways of making things. Countries having weapons of such power that we could blow the world up about a thousand times over. And you say that one man died for us? Even if that was the case do you really think that most people nowadays could care? If some man turned up on the six o'clock news and said "I am the lord Jesus Christ, returned to claim the world for my Father, The Lord Our God" most people would say he was nuts and that he should be locked up. Yes, if he was killed as you described, and records show that there was a carpenters son of about that time who was killed by the romans, it would be extremely painful, but I have never seen any proof within my own life, the lives of those around me or the world in general that God exists, that he put someone on this earth and that that son died for the sake of the human race. By the way if Mary and Joseph were married and she had a son by God, doesnt that make God an adulterer?
Date: 7/11/2003 4:36:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 30051    This s ot n debate here ore I m not oimg o debate with you. You have a right to your beliefs. I no I'm right and your wrong. Jesus is Lord. You'll see some day:)
Date: 7/11/2003 4:38:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 30051    OOps..This is not in debate therefore I'm not going to debate.
Date: 7/11/2003 4:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 46527    If you believe that strongly CoryAnn, then good on you, I just hope it never turns on you in the same way that it did me.
Date: 7/11/2003 4:39:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 30051    BTW Mary became pregnant before they were married:)
Date: 7/11/2003 4:40:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 30051    I'll be back later.
Date: 7/11/2003 4:40:00 PM  From Authorid: 46530    I know it is not a debate and I am not intolerant of your views, you are welcome to them. By the way, if they were not married that does conjure up some interesting questions... as mary and God were not married Jesus was born out of wedlock.
Date: 7/11/2003 4:41:00 PM  From Authorid: 21867    What has the Lord done for me. I allow myself to smile now...to love now...to feel and express. He led me back to my heart. And I love Him for that. Peace,
Date: 7/11/2003 4:42:00 PM  From Authorid: 59214    CoryAnn, your statment was rude and close minded. "Jesus is Lord. You'll see some day" is quite a foolish thing to say if you want someone to respect YOUR beliefs.

YOU believe jesus if the lord. Great. That doesn't mean he is. Someone else might believe shiva is the lord, also wonderful, but doesn't make them right.

It's a matter of opinion and belief.

Think before you speak.

Date: 7/11/2003 4:59:00 PM  From Authorid: 62222    And if Jesus was born out of wedlock, is God not subject to his own Commandments? "Thou shalt not commit adultery" I don't know that I would want to be saved by a God who didn't even listen to himself. And also, Christ was not the only one who suffered during his crucifixtions, do you think that all those other guys got crucified by roses? Should I hail the theives and murders who were crucified as my saviors as well? And let's not even go into the fact that Christ's crucifixtion would have meant nothing as a parable if Judas's hadn't betrayed him because then there would be nothing to compare Christ's goodness to. Should I not honor Judas as my partial savior as well? <regretfulhalo>
Date: 7/11/2003 5:37:00 PM  From Authorid: 39887    Could you share the name of the author, I'd like to share this book with someone. It is so sad and heart breaking and how many of us would allow our sons to be treated this way to save even one other person. Thank you GOD. I pray to God each day to keep working on me, like the bible song says," He's still working on me to make me what I ought to be".Praise God for caring this much for me.
Date: 7/11/2003 8:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 24845    I knew this along time ago and it never fails to humble me. We have no idea what Jesus went through for our souls. Very Good Post. Thanks for telling others about His sacrifice. :)
Date: 7/11/2003 8:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 24845    Ya know what Cory Ann. I'm so sorry about these people that responded to your story so...I can't even think of the word. Ya know, we are all entitled to our beliefs, that doesn't give a person or persons the right to put down someone else. That goes for Christians too. It really saddens me to see HUMAN BEINGS being ugly to others simply because they believe different. For the record. Cory Ann, You and I and thousands, millions of others ARE right. God smiled at you today as you tried to share His word, but don't take it personally, they just don't know the story.
Date: 7/11/2003 8:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 54987    No man or professed son of God died for me. If you read without questioning then you will take in all sorts of untruths. It is only a story to keep the simple minded of the time from knowing the truth. That is what I believe. No God, real or imagined has 'done' anything for me. I have done it for myself.
Date: 7/11/2003 8:49:00 PM  From Authorid: 41067    True, this is not in debate, however ity *is* in discussion, therefore people who have opinions that differ should be allowed to express them. what about all the people that 'know' that they are right and you are wrong? I know you'll not agree with them, and they will not agree with you, thats what faith and beliefs are about, something you as a person believe in, it does not matter if you are right or wrong, nor should anyone judge what other people believe as right or wrong.
Date: 7/11/2003 10:48:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 30051    Thanks for the comments. I do not judge other people for what hey believe. If I think I'm right and your wrong. That's okay too! I have a right to think whatever I want:) And so do you. Isn't that wonderful:) And to the person who said I was rude for saying I'm right and your wrong. Guess what? You have the right to feel that way:)
Date: 7/11/2003 10:57:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 30051    Think before I speak?? Well lets see..Hmmmmmmmmm. Okay I thougt about it and I STILL think Jesus is Lord and some day YOU will see!
Date: 7/11/2003 11:13:00 PM  From Authorid: 53838    To my aughter who I love ery much. I am sitting at my computer withtears in my eyes. Not for your story even though it touched me dealy. I heard a sermon once on the effects of the cross. hat brought me to tears is that so many people do not know the love of the Lord. What I know in my heart is no matter how long ago it was written or how many times it was translated the truth is in there some where. I BELIEVE I love yo for your kind heart for the LORD, Mom
Date: 7/11/2003 11:17:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 30051    Is that the only reason you love me?? Nooo it's because I'm a Bingo superstar!!
Date: 7/12/2003 8:05:00 AM  From Authorid: 54247    CoryAnn thanks for your posting. Please do not be upset by negative responses. Jesus did show us the way - and, it is not smooth. Even some of my religious relatives and friends were shocked when my firstborn was deaf, "Oh my, you must have really sinned!" Yes, I have sinned in my time, but my faith has sustained me - and, sounds like it is sustaining you! Were they punishing me and my son? What wonderful messages and love we have learned because of the deafness! Did you know that all of us with all of our hearing and speech do not communicate any better than we do with the deaf? RAT
Date: 7/12/2003 11:35:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 30051    I'm not upset:) I think your outlook on life is very inspiring:)
Date: 7/12/2003 1:38:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    Number one, Mary was not married to Joseph when Jesus was concieved. Jesus was concieved by imaculent conception, not through fleshly intercourse, so no sexual sin was in place here. Also adultry is when two people that are married to other people have sex together. LOL, How could God or Mary commit adultry?? REGRETFULHALO, it wasnt because of his death it was because of his Shed blood that this blood was pure, ,with out sin, untainted, and that is what it took to take back what adam gave away.
Date: 7/12/2003 1:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    God has given me salvation, given me peace ,healed me of hypoglacmia, has given me strength to forgive those that I thought I could not forgive, He has given me much. The biggest of all is eternal life.
Date: 7/12/2003 1:43:00 PM  From Authorid: 16671    Rat what some seem to not understand is that Jesus tells us that satan comes to kill, steal and destroy that is the the author of sickness and disease. Sure lots of time WE may reap what we sow, but under the new covenant God is not going to place anything on our children for something that we have done. People just dont care to understand the spiritual laws that God has, and so they make stupid remarks such as BOY did you sin. God healed me of hypoglacmia and I've seen Him heal others of so many worse things that what I had, He can heal your son. I dont understand why sometimes people dont get healed and why sometimes they do. Only God knows, but God does say, " I"m the God that healeth thee."
Date: 7/12/2003 4:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 54247    Thanks, Firstborn. Yes, I was never able to be upset about the "You must have sinned" comments. My biggest fear has been that I would drive people away from faith. Have learned that each of us has a different path and I am so happy the path leads to HIM! RAT
Date: 7/13/2003 8:55:00 AM  From Authorid: 16671    Amen Rat!!
Date: 7/13/2003 7:23:00 PM  From Authorid: 54987    And I'm so happy my path does not lead to him.
Date: 7/13/2003 8:20:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 30051    We will see if your still saying that when you die:)
Date: 7/14/2003 4:20:00 AM  From Authorid: 41067    How will you see that?
Date: 7/14/2003 7:43:00 AM  From Authorid: 54247    Thanks, Koolade - actually, I will probably see you there because so many nonbelievers "steal Heaven" by believing in their last days - don't be hurt by this, I would love to meet you there! Just that I will be a little jealous of all late bloomers! RAT
Date: 7/14/2003 11:31:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 30051    Amen RAT:)
Date: 7/14/2003 7:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 54987    Rat... thanks LOL. I am a non-believer in a Christian God or the bible. However, I do believe in a life after physical death, but that is where we part company. Indeed, we may meet but it won't be for you to say "I told you so" LOL. As for 'stealing heaven' I do agree that a lot of people live a life of selfishness and cruelty only to be 'saved' on the deathbed. The truth is there is no last minute saving for anyone. The spirit world is open to all religions and non-religions. Our spiritual environment will be in line with how we lived our lives, not in some last minute acknowlegement of a Jesus. Our greatest judge is ourselves and we can't escape ourselves. Cheers.
Date: 7/14/2003 7:34:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 30051    So you say.
Date: 7/14/2003 9:46:00 PM  From Authorid: 41067    Still waiting for an answer...
Date: 7/15/2003 9:27:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 30051    We'll see that when we go to heaven or die. Then we will all know the truth, won't we:)
Date: 7/15/2003 10:02:00 AM  From Authorid: 54987    Yes we certainly will Coryan... we certainly will. And yes I do say.
Date: 7/15/2003 3:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 41067    Yes, but how will you see what Koolade is saying at the point of death? Will you be there waiting to listen?
Date: 7/15/2003 5:08:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 30051    Sure will:)
Date: 7/15/2003 6:27:00 PM  From Authorid: 54987    Yeah she'll be there and I'll say, "Coryann you were wrong girl!" and she'll say, "Yeah! All those years worshippin sumthang that weren't real!" LOL
Date: 7/15/2003 7:19:00 PM  From Authorid: 41067    Ok, how will you be there?
Date: 7/15/2003 8:47:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 30051    I don't see the point in what you are saying Tandris.
Date: 11/1/2003 4:51:00 AM  From Authorid: 53054    CorryAnn you posted this a while ago, but i do thank you for posting it! *hugz*
Date: 11/1/2003 5:09:00 AM  From Authorid: 28946    I never had knew this before and it is so horrible for him to have gone through but yet He did it to so that we might have a chance when we die and our spirit to go to Heaven.
Date: 11/1/2003 7:26:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 30051    Your very welcome. I'm glad you two replied..I needed to read this post again:) Makes me really grateful and when I start feeling sorry for myself all I need to do is read this and then I know my troubles are just not that bad!!
