I sat down on the bed ready for anything. She stood in front of me with a knowing smile tattooed on her face. When she saw the neutral look I was returning her, the smile slowly distorted into a frown. Gracefully, she walked over to my desk, and set “The Book” down on top of it. Then she turned and winked at me. She knew what she was about to tell me was going to be awful, and… she loved it. As I watched her move around the room, one thought kept circling through my mind. That thought was, ‘what did she mean when she said that she had worn me down enough.’ The thought terrified me.
“Paul,” she started, “you’re a weak person. Do you know why?” She paused, waiting for a response from me; I said nothing. She continued, “You’re week because you have love in your heart. Love makes you a blind person.” The red head let out a high-pitched howl of laughter. “Love makes anyone a blind person,” she continued, “You cared about your wife, your father… your job for goodness sakes; you loved those things so much that you allowed me to move in and take advantage of you. And like I said… you were completely blind to it. You, Paul, let me manipulate your life – to play with you – to the extent that now… now your putty in my hands.”
“What do you mean?” My tiny voice asked. I should’ve kept my mouth shut, because that question destroyed her calm mood.
“DON”T… INTERUPT… ME!” She screamed. I jumped out of my skin, yet I couldn’t move; I was frozen with fear. The red headed lady, suddenly calmed down again, she continued, “I am going to explain everything. All you have to do is sit there and shut… up.” With the elegance of a ballerina, the red headed lady walked over to the bedroom window, and looked out over the lake. Suddenly, she turned back to me.
“Paul.” She said, this time in a sweet voice. “Paul, would you like things to be as they were before that day, back in August, when you opened that book?” I didn’t speak; I was scared to speak, I just shook my head up, and down. “Well, I can’t do that.” She said with a smirk. “But what I can do is make your life better then what it was before you opened the book.”
I was getting angry with this woman… I mean my blood was beginning to boil. All I wanted to know was, what was going on with my life. There was no way I could stay quiet anymore, I said, “You’re not who you told me you are… am I right about that? I mean, you said that you were my souls guide… that you were a part of me. That was a lie wasn’t it?”
She didn’t get angry – she had me completely confused, her mood was totally unpredictable from second to second – she spoke softly. “Part of what I told you was a lie, but not all of it. You see, Paul, I’m not your soul’s guide, but I am a part of you; for I am the dark part of you. I am the person who causes you to hate, I am your anger, I am your lies, and deception Paul… I am your fears. I am a master at what I do – I certainly deceived you didn’t I Paul.”
The red headed lady walked from the window back to my desk, she continued, “Now Paul, what I’m about to tell you will cause you to get extremely angry – trust me, I know – but I will warn you only once… you better not let that anger show or the deal I’m about to set forth will never happen, and your life will continue on its downward spiral. Do you understand me?”
“Yes.” I said.
“Good.” She picked “The Book” up off the desk, yet again, and began to speak. “Paul, certain situations come along once in a lifetime, and since I have lived many, many lifetimes I have had a lot of these situations come about. The situations I speak of, is the recruitment of new souls to become immortal, and to learn what I do; to learn how to be someone’s anger, someone’s lies. Every living soul needs anger, needs deception to ultimately be happy. Paul… before I provided you with the book, as you call it, I knew what your future held – I knew Becky was going to be pregnant, I knew that you were going to lose your job if you hadn’t have been in that accident. But I also knew what your fears were, I knew that you lacked self-control, and I knew how much of a caring person you are. And I used that against you. You wanted to know, so badly, what the future held, that you were the perfect target.”
I couldn’t take her lecture anymore, I spoke up out of anger, “What are you getting at.”
“I told you PAUL, don’t get angry. In fact, I don’t want you to speak again until I tell you to. Understood?”
I shook my head.
“I gave you the book to hang yourself. I knew that you would open it, and once the book was opened I knew I could manipulate you… predict you. The love that makes you blind hurt you; your love made you to want to do good with the book, but all it did was destroy you. Look at the predicament your in, your wife is dying, you boss's at work are using you, your father's dead, there’s a poor woman who will never walk again because of your "kindness". I can go on… because your future holds nothing but bad things for you now.” She held up the book, and continued, “Look at your book, Paul. Do you notice anything different?”
I did notice something… “The Book”… had shrunk.
“Your future is shorter. You've changed your whole life. Becky doesn’t have much of a future, and your father is already history. But that was my doing.”
