You are invited to party this Friday night. Where: At the house of Mr. and Mrs. Ryan Toman. When: I just said, Friday night, from 5:00p.m. till everyone leaves. Why: New Year's Eve baby!
Ben put the invitation back into the envelope and handed it back to Paul. "Sorry man, not this year." he said in a sympathetic tone. So that was it, Paul would go to the Toman's annual shin-dig without Ben this year. It wouldn't be the same without everyone's best friend. But the Toman's sure could throw a party.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was New Year's Eve, 2003, Ryan and his wife, Jen, had everything ready. The food, the drinks, the living room. It was all set. The clock read ten minutes to five, they sat down in their chairs and took in what time they had before 2004.
They had the ideal house for such a party. When you opened the front door, a set of stairs went up to the kitchen. To the right were two stairs going down that opened up into a large room with white carpet. Three picture window gave a view of their front yard. Ryan and Jen's chairs sat facing the corner of the wall and the windows. In that corner was their big screen TV with the top of the line surround sound stereo system, VCR, and DVD player. All this sat in a beautiful oak cabinet that Ryan made.
Their kitchen was a balcony, overlooking the living room. From here you could go down the hall to their bedroom or bathroom, or go downstairs to the den or guest room. There was another small room that they had a TV in downstairs that was going to be their kids playroom when they had some. It is important you know the details of their house for later on in the story.
Ryan and Jen where chatting about their life together up until now. They had been married only a year and a half but engaged for three. They were both very happy.
In the middle of the conversation, Ryan noticed a small white light in the east. It was growing rather fast. "The sun already set, and it's only five. What is that?" he asked to no one in particular.
Jen looked out the window at the now blinding light. "I don't know," she answered, squinting,"Let's not let it get us down. Let's just enjoy the evening."
Had they payed more attention to it, they would have been better off, for the sun wasn't rising, but catastrophe was.
