title: "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen"
starring: Sean Connery, Peta Wilson, Stuart Townsend
genre: sci-fi action
One can compare "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" to a piece of sugary bubble gum; it's fruity for a while, but eventually gets tasteless and annoying. Sean Connery, with his patented Scottish accent, is back as flighty sniper Allan Quartermain, who heads a heroic group of literature superheroes. There's Dorian Gray (Townsend), the snobby painter whose self-potrait leads to his demise; and the Invisible Man, whose invincibility plays as both joke and strategicness for the group. Also in the circle are Captain Nemo, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and a sultry vampire -supposedly, the wife of Dracula- , played by Peta Wilson. There's also a plot, too, something about defeating the villianous Phantom, who is bent on starting up a world war. It all moves very fast though, and the action is withered down to excerpts from movies we've already seen. Also, listen closely for the sound of a ball dropping; that's the special effects team. When our heroes encounter Venice blowing up into smithereens and crashing down, the city resembles a Vincent Price drawing with stick figures. FX aside, the movie is rough-and-tumble fluff, and soon you're going to wish you had another piece of gum. grade: C+
