MovieReview: "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen"

title: "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen"

starring: Sean Connery, Peta Wilson, Stuart Townsend

genre: sci-fi action

One can compare "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" to a piece of sugary bubble gum; it's fruity for a while, but eventually gets tasteless and annoying. Sean Connery, with his patented Scottish accent, is back as flighty sniper Allan Quartermain, who heads a heroic group of literature superheroes. There's Dorian Gray (Townsend), the snobby painter whose self-potrait leads to his demise; and the Invisible Man, whose invincibility plays as both joke and strategicness for the group. Also in the circle are Captain Nemo, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and a sultry vampire -supposedly, the wife of Dracula- , played by Peta Wilson. There's also a plot, too, something about defeating the villianous Phantom, who is bent on starting up a world war. It all moves very fast though, and the action is withered down to excerpts from movies we've already seen. Also, listen closely for the sound of a ball dropping; that's the special effects team. When our heroes encounter Venice blowing up into smithereens and crashing down, the city resembles a Vincent Price drawing with stick figures. FX aside, the movie is rough-and-tumble fluff, and soon you're going to wish you had another piece of gum. grade: C+

cool scenes: The League's modes of transportation

look for: Wilson and Townsend are respectable in their roles

MPAA: PG-13

out there:

"Pirates of the Carribean: Curse of the Black Pearl": A-

"Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle": C+

"The Hulk": B-

coming up:

"Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life"

"American Wedding"

"Seabiscut"

Date: 7/12/2003 1:44:00 PM  From Authorid: 5353    You're opinion is not alone, from what I've read. There were high hopes for this movie, but a lot of people are disappointed.

Date: 7/13/2003 1:32:00 AM  From Authorid: 62100    Wow..I saw the movie tonight and I thought it was very good...I thought it was interesting how all of the characters were from literary works and the combination of characters assembled...I don't really agree with the review but to each their own...
Date: 7/13/2003 1:52:00 AM  From Authorid: 28946    I haven't seen this one yet but I don't think Sean Connery could ever make a "bad" movie. I find him very sexy and macho. LOL.
Date: 7/13/2003 9:15:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 29387    Xylanthia - I'm glad you enjoyed it...I agree with you Penny, um, about not making a "bad" movie; this one isn't bad, it's just not one of his best...
Date: 7/13/2003 2:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 62132    Thanks for the review.
Date: 7/14/2003 10:24:00 AM  From Authorid: 62222    I thought the movie was okay, but I thought it was too short and I think the length led to a bit of underdeveloped plot. I mean 20 minutes could have be the difference of the plot making more sense, and seeming more ummm, "put together". I did like Stuart Townsend, but he has this really awesome way of putting just the right inflection on his words to make them interesting. So I am not sure if the dialog would have worked with another actor. Good Review, thanks for posting. <regretfulhalo>

Date: 12/30/2004 9:36:00 PM  From Authorid: 49354    It was only ok. I guess my expectations were too high.
