Where have all the bake sales gone???

Hello Everyone! Where have all the bake sales and school fairs gone? When I was younger we would always have a bake sale or a school fair to raise money. We even volunteered at small local shops as bag people. It seems like now-a-days to raise money, they stick kids out on the street with a bucket to basically beg. I was just out running some errands and there were five girls, in the 13-15 age range, out standing in the median and weaving in and out of stopped traffic with buckets. They are trying to get enough money so that their cheerleading sqaud can go to Hawaii. Now don't get me wrong this might be okay for a side street or a smaller road, but this was a 4 lane (on each side) highway, and they were standing at the intersection (one of the deadliest intersections in the area to top that). And what makes this even better is I saw no adults whatsoever. So what would happen if God forbid, one of these girls fell into traffic, or traffic started moving again and someone wasn't paying attention and hit one of them?

I'm sorry if I sound a little angry, I just don't want to see children/young people to get hurt, either by getting hit by a car or standing on a hot road. I mean it's 95 degrees outside right now. If I had kids, I would definitely not want them standing out in the middle of the road on a 95 degree day.

Maybe this is just happening in my area, I don't know. What do you guys think? Is this okay or not okay?

Thanks for letting me ramble on!

We still have bake sales (every Fri) and from time to time they have candy sales to help fund their trips. Maybe you should go to the school board and suggest they bring back the bake sales in your area.

Date: 7/12/2003 3:37:00 PM  From Authorid: 36901    I agree with you. We used to have bake sales, car washes and anything else we could think of to raise money. I always see groups "begging" these days on corners and in medians. It is very dangerous. I always want to shout 'go wash a car or something' at them.
Date: 7/12/2003 4:27:00 PM  From Authorid: 53052    car washes are still popular!! and now they usually sell chocolate bars door to door OR they sell things lit hotdogs and pizza.... bake sales and school fairs are usually only for the young elementary schools now a days

Date: 7/13/2003 5:42:00 AM  From Authorid: 10245    around here thy sell candy bars and wrapping paper door to door. I refuse to allow my children to participate... instead I write a check myself. I just don't think it's safe, they're too young. Some of the older kids do the car wash thing, too... it's usually a church youth group using their bikinis to reel them in.
