Marlton the Magnificent
If you glimpse him, let me know That I may come and ogle At this great legend you have observed Who’s seen mountain, desert, jungle
Ah, the maidens sigh and swoon When subject to his charm And this may cause their prudish parents Many a false alarm
Yet not one of these who sigh Have ever touched his heart I myself cannot contest For flirting is an art
I feel the lure of his handsome face And can recite his sagas by rote Yet I never dreamed I would fall prey To poetry in a note:
You’re the flower in this cruel world The one and only beauty And even if we haven’t spoke Please accept this poem of piety
I truly hope you’ve found out how To look past all my famousness And see the man I am who longs For a sincere caress
So, my blooming desert flower I have just one request Oh, please come sing to me tonight And put my heart to rest
I was, to say it in the least Quite shocked and full of wonderment That such a man would care to write A poem so eloquent
And so I wrote a letter back To tell him my assent I would sing to him alone And this is how it went:
Marlton the Magnificent I never knew you wrote Such verses I have never read Giv’n to me in a note
To sing for you would be delight But I will have you know I’ll leave before the clock strikes one Or else you’ll be of woe
At that I sent my note to him And waited for the night Knowing as I sat and thought He could not know my plight
I found him seated on a bench In the rose garden The moonlight shined across his face I lost my head and ran
Scared, was I, that striking visage That blazed with fervent love Nay, I couldn’t yet believe - - I was his mourning dove
He saw me dart away from him I heard him whisper this It cut me to my very core I knew I was remiss
“I’ll love you even though you run And forget to sing to me Just know that you are very dear To me, you are the key.”
I turned and looked into those eyes Noticed the rose he held And that was what he offered as Our hearts began to meld
