Living in the far east in the Land of Dawn, the Phoenix is an immortal. Only one Phoenix exists at one time. Said to live for 500 years (or even 12,000 claimed one philosopher), the Phoenix is the greatest of all birds of the sky. In appearance, it is claimed to be like a peacock or eagle, with a neck of gold feathers, and its wings are a shifting hue of the rainbow. It's long tail feathers are like a peacock's, and it has a swan shaped head.
The Phoenix nests in the highest of trees, and eats herbs and spices as well as bathing in springs. However, as the centuries wear on, the Phoenix becomes tired and weathered. It begings to loose it's colour, and after five centuries, it gathers spices and builds a nest of them in a date-palm. It lets out a single, beautiful cry, before the spices explode in flame. The phoenix fans them with its wings, and they engulf the bird.
After three days, the ashes stir, and a newborn phoenix awakes. The bird grows into a brilliant new creature, and it gathers its predececor's ashes, and flys to Heliopolis in Egypt, the city of thre sun. It drops them on the altar to Ra, the sun god, and flies back to the Land of Dawn to live on, until it dies again, only to rise from its own ashes.
