You remember Polly right? The little microsized piece of plastic that lived in a compact? Some of you know her as a bigger piece of rubber that you can dress. I grew up with the original, and I still have a few that I will pass down to my kids, but I just wanted to refresh your memory of the "Real" Polly Pocket.

Bluebird Toys of Swindon, England, took the toy market by storm when it was founded by Torquil Norman in 1980 and enjoyed worldwide success with its Magic Teapot and Polly Pocket products. The UK Polly Pocket site has a really interesting account of how the designer started this great line of toys by putting a little "house" inside of a powder compact - check it out. I believe toy giant Mattel has been distributing Polly Pocket since 1989. In September of 1998, Bluebird closed its plant, when its owner Mattel integrated the plant's activities into its own UK operation. I'm told there was no production of Polly Pocket in 1998, but in 1999 they were booming again with the Action Park series and the newly styled Polly Pocket.
So far, it seems that the reaction to the new Polly Pocket is not favourable among collectors, although she does seem to be growing on many. The majority of adults that wrote to me about the "new" Polly didn't like her nearly as much as the old Polly and most hadn't bought any pieces of the new version. On the other hand, many of the adults indicated that their children liked the new Polly Pocket just fine.
From 1989 through 1998, Mattel/Bluebird issued many very cute and highly detailed series of playsets in the original style. How it changed my life:I wonder if the orignal would be worth any thing now? Well anyway that site I listed as some pictures and stuff ;)
