The other day my friend and I went to this out of town mall in New York. While we were there we stopped at this little kind of ecclectic store. It was on the second floor and light came in through the glass from the roof.
I walked to the back of the store while she went ballistic over some figurine they had, I wasn't paying too much attention to her. The store's back row was like barbie dolls, wierd barbie-spin-off dolls, and shelves of knives.
Towards the middle of the wall where i stood the knives met the dolls. The knife shelf was above the dolls shelf and one of the dolls lay face towards the knife on a shelf below it. The shelf to the right and elevated above the doll held a knife that caught my interest so being curious I reached for it.
As soon as my hand touched it, the blade slid down the stand and impaled the doll in the face. I pulled my hand back and looked around, not wanting to walk out with the impaled barbie doll or the knife on the faulty stand, and when I confirmed no one was around I grabbed my friend by the hand and rushed out of the store.
Laughing I told her the story and we joked for a while, taking the escalator down to the first floor. On the first floor there was one solid hallway and in the middle were those shop carts. I only noticed by slight glance a cart that high above it held long samurai-style swords. As we walked I brushed by a cart - not realizing how close I was to them.
It was a little further down the hall that my friend stole my glasses. Laughingly I reached for them and we took a step forward.
If I'm correct it was on that step that the man at the knife cart gasped. I looked forward and watched (totally oblivious to what was unfolding) something shiny and silver glide towards me.
My friend stepped back and watched. It was totally sudden that the man caught the sword that had slid off it's stand.
I blinked. My eyelashes touched the tip of the blade. I looked around still not quite comprehending. My mouth was ajar, my lip trembled, and my tongue counted the teeth I had.
My friend grabbed me and yelled at the guy for the next ten minutes (my friend likes to yell), and I couldn't help but realize the irony of it all and how lucky I was to still have my left eye. How it changed my life:I don't walk towards the carts in the mall anymore!
