How do you meditate? *PunkStarChik*

Hey everyone!

I'm having trouble trying to meditate. I've tried looking up how to meditate over the net and here and USM but I think I'm mainly having trouble clearing my mind. I hate that I'm such a big thinker. LOL! I think WAY too much.

A couple days ago, I went to park where it was nice and quiet and tried to meditate. I breathed in from my nose and let the air out of my mouth. Thinking, good thoughts in and good thoughts out. And all that other stuff...I was sitting the way that would make me comfortable and even have my shoes off. Then some stupid mosiquto bit my toe. (Stupid bug)

How can I clear my mind easier? I've been practicing for several days for about 5 minutes. I think that I have to just keep practicing because I know that I won't be able to get it right on the first time. I know it will take somet time.

How long did it take you to acutally clear your mind and be able to meditate? I'm going to keep practicing. I just need help how I can clear my mind easier. Any ideas?

I used to get a jar of sand from Tybee Island everytime I went and would save the sand and when I was having high stress i'd sift that sand through my hands (not the whole jar) and think of ocean noises and the waves, and it takes me to a special place, and art, art takes me everywhere, it conquers stress and boredom

Date: 8/6/2003 4:30:00 PM  From Authorid: 53284    Practice. Random thoughts just keep popping into your mind. When you realize that you've popped up again just continue to meditate. It does take time.  
Date: 8/6/2003 6:58:00 PM  From Authorid: 54987    Well for a start, you don't TRY to meditate... you just DO it. It's not easy and many people give up very quickly. You probably know that the best method is to focus on something. Hold something in your hand, an object. That might help you to focus on it. As you focus on the object, begin to feel at one with it... that you are the object... you and the object are one. When focussing on the breath. Breathe in slowly and count to 5. As you breathe out count backwards from 5 to 1. Nice and slow. If any thoughts come, just accept them and let them go.
