I was thinking (as I often do) and the subject of my thoughts in this instance was Elevators. Yes, Elevators or Lifts, as we sometimes call them in the UK. Then it made me wonder. Why on Earth do we call them Elevators or Lifts? Both these words suggest that the movement of them is only upwards but we know they also go downwards! So, I was thinking… perhaps they’d be better known as ADPCs (Ascending & Descending Passenger Compartments)?
The same goes for Escalators. They go downwards as well as upwards. So, why give them an upward name? Escalate also suggests it not only moves upwards but gets bigger. But these doesn’t get bigger, they just change state. Perhaps, we should call these ADMSs (Ascending & Descending Moving Stairs?
Have you ever noticed things which seem to be incorrectly named? If so, what new name would you suggest for them?
