A friend of mine served with UN forces in the Middle East in the 1970s and told me something intriguing:
During his leave time, he went down to the Suez Canal, which as you may know connects the Red Sea to the Mediterranean. While he was there, watching the ships pass by, he fell into a conversation with one of the Old Timers on the canal. The old man had worked there all his life, and passed on a story he had heard from his mentor, who had been there when the canal opened.
The man said that his mentor had seen something unusual before the Suez Canal opened in 1869. According to the story, the man had been walk by the red sea and noticed something: through a combination of the receding tide and a offshore wind, the Red Sea parted! A swath of about fifty feet of land in width was opened up--certainly big enough for people to walk through to the other side!
Since the Suez Canal opened, the tides and water tables have been changed around, and the phenomenon no longer happens. But the old man was sure that he had seen a recreation of the famous feat of Moses! Not to disparage Biblical miracles, but a canny man leading a retreating people would not necessarily have needed a miracle to find a safe passage through the waters--he would only have needed to know at what time the tide was going to turn; or, that information was passed on to him by a higher power, who did know!
Too bad the canal altered things, or this would be a testament of faith and historical accuracy!
How it changed my life:It instilled in me a love of history!
