Yup, TCM, Psycho, Hannibal Lechtor, all (loosely) based on Eddie. Sick sick puppy was he. |

Yes, the above is right, the TCM is based very LOOSELY on Ed Gein. So is Hannibal Lecter. BTW, the movie didn't mess with you because it is based loosely on a true story if you didn't KNOW it was. It messed with you because of how it was presented. Ah, the art of cinemetography. |

actually, yes, but very loosely, as the others pointed out. Ed Gein was a very, very sick person. |

I have not seen the movie for years now. However I do recall that in the begening or end - Im not sure which, it says that it is loosly based on a true story. To find out for sure, go and rent it. I am POSITIVE its at the begening or end. But also keep in mind, that even though it says its true, that doeasnt mean it actually is... The movie could put it on there to mess with us, cause debates like this, and scare us even more! |

Texas Chainsaw Massacre is LOOSLY based on Ed Gein. The face mask is really all that its based on, nothing else. So was Silence Of The Lambs (the cannibalism and the nature of Hannibal) and Psycho (Geins weird attachment to his mother - like in Psycho) So no, TCM isnt true...its loosly based on a true story of Gein. The actual events didnt really happen like they did in the film. |

Yes, the film is INSPIRED by Ed Gein but not based on him. The whole "true story" was a marketing ploy to make it more horrifying (one of the original writers of the film is a professor at the university I attend so we know all about it). Also, taking into consideration that the original film was released exactly 1 year after the events, (like someone said online) the crew would have been there filming the actual murders...doesn't sound plausible... |

Court TV has a crime library that you can all read up on Eddie Gein. And it was the Buffalo Bill Killer in Silence of the Lambs that was based on Gein's killings, cause he wore the skin of the bodies he dug up. It is inspired by his killings but not BASED off of him...LeatherFace is a character, Eddie Gein and people like him are a REALITY. Although Leatherface is scary, he is an obvious psycho, creepier are the psychos you don't know about yet. If you want to know more I would suggest court TV's site, look up their crime library part.<RegretfulHalo> |

Ed gein is true, and he was all that you said. A lot of horror movies were based on him, but not Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I've read alot on it, and really can't find much, but supposedly there is a story very similar to the movie that actually happened, meaning, they found a house full of crap like in the texas chainsaw massacre and people had been disappearing around that time. but that's one that isn't based on ed gein. i've got a good book on gein, lots of photos and interviews with folks that knew him. |

Yes, it was loosely based on Ed Gein. IMO, Texas Chainsaw Massacre is scary because it could happen in real life. You know those neighbors that keep to themselves and act suspicious... they could be like the TCM family! THAT is why I think it is scary. Good post :) *ANGUS* |

*sigh* Loosely based on Ed Gein, but not based on a true story. I love how everyone from TX has a cousin or uncle or something who knows someone who was there when it happened or shared a jail cell with Leatherface. I find it hillarious. But yeah, it's not based on something that happened in TX. The screenwriter who came up with the story used to teach where I went to school and to make matters worst, the "events" would have had to be happening when the film was shot considering it takes place the summer before the movie was released. ;-) |

TCM was not a true story, however they based some of leatherface's charcter off of Ed Gein. (His traits have been used in other horror movies) Ed Gein was always around his mother, she was frantically religious and would read the bible to him about the evils of the world. According to what I've read and watched (documentaries) his mother died of cancer or a series of strokes. (Not sure which) Ed being isolated & all alone somehow got this notion in his head that he could bring his mother back, that's when he started exhuming womens bodies and taking parts from them, he wore the skin, he used the bones and made furniture out of them ect ect. Basically the man was clinically insane. |

I've heard it was a true story based out of Texas. They're coming out with TCM the beginning. Maybe that will help clear some things up. |

There was only one Edd Gein, and the TCM is LOOSELY based on him, as are the other movies you mentioned. What you read about that is correct. There was no other killer like that but him that they are all based upon. |

As far as I know, his atrocities have inspired many awful horror movies. |

Well you will find that alot of hollywood movies will change the true story a little bit everytime. it's pretty hard to say it's a true story once hollywood get to the story. |

I read about Ed Gein years ago when I was studying serial killers! Absolutely terrifying to think these people walk among us. Love and Light |
