Punishment? How tuff should it be.

Hey Everyone...

Punishment? I've been watching and reading the news lately. Something I try hard to stay away from. I think it is mostly all negative. Anyhow you hear about these parents on another post here at USM, locking up their twins in cages. 5 year old twins and they can't even talk! They just make noises. Poor things were covered in their own waste. Then on another post you read about a mother who is selling her daughter to drug dealers for money and drugs. You hear about these people who beat animals! Back when I was looking for my puppy I have now. Man the stories I would hear about people locking dogs in U-hauls and leaving them in their waste. Dragging them by rope with vehicles. These dogs had the worst burns I have ever seen from their owner dragging them across town. I mean sick stuff. How can people do this to another human being or animal. I mean especially to their own kids and pets. You are suppose to love and nurture them. Protect and guide them. I can't justify abuse from any angle, but it makes me extra sick when it is their own. I personally don't think the prison system is thick enough. I mean if you know without a doubt someone did this. I think they should be punished the same way. People get in trouble they go to jail or prison. They get 3 meals a day, bed, sleep, slight work, school, gym, classes, ect. I know people who are in prison for small things, but the ones who have got in trouble and moved to high security just pass on through the system. My one friend gets in trouble hear and there just to go to jail to get away from his wife. Don't ask me, but I think if some crimes were due to pay higher punishments some of this might stop! I am also torn on violence shouldn’t equal violence. Like you know like 2 wrongs don’t make a right. The system can be like a vacation for a lot of criminal is what I am saying. I would like to see harsher punishments on people caught for a fact abusing kids, people, animals and nature! What do you all think?

Date: 8/28/2003 4:11:00 PM  From Authorid: 13119    I believe in an eye for an eye. If the person did something horrific then , pitter patter let's get atter, same thing should be inflicted upon them.
Date: 8/28/2003 4:15:00 PM  From Authorid: 16849    I'm getting confused here. You violence shouldn't equal violence, but you want harsher punishments for criminals. What kind of punishments are you suggesting? And what would be considered abusing nature?
Date: 8/28/2003 4:18:00 PM  From Authorid: 16849    "An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind." -Ghandi
Date: 8/28/2003 4:21:00 PM  From Authorid: 53013    I am with you. To some people jail is just a "vacation" on the tax payers.
Date: 8/28/2003 4:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 13119    that's nice but did Ghandi ever have someone in his family murdered? Why should someone get away with a prison sentence when they have taken the life of another. I think if you kill you should be killed.
Date: 8/28/2003 4:23:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34814    PYRO I mean that is what I am torn on. Like there is a part of me that thinks they should get the same treatment. Then there is a part of me that thinks 2 wrong don't make a right. It is for sure though that it is a vacation for many criminals. Maybe through this debate someone will find a medium. WHat I consider by harming nature is dumping huge tons of toxic live waste and oil into the water on purpose to dump. Stuff like that. Got me?
Date: 8/28/2003 4:25:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34814    Ghandi sounds real open minded
Date: 8/28/2003 4:26:00 PM  From Authorid: 35720    I think that Ghandi quote is neat, but I don't always agree with it. It depends on the situation to me..
Date: 8/28/2003 4:39:00 PM  From Authorid: 62222    This is a touchy subject because Justice is a idea that is based on perception. We can all say that two wrongs don't make a right, but then if it is our heart that is broken by some criminal, what do we think then. For the most part, our hearts would fill with hate and despair that this person had hurt us, or taken something from us...something we couldn't get back. It is hard to say what is the right way to punish those who would do wrong. As for me, I believe we are too lax on some things, and too strict on others. I don't think it is right that someone with 3 felony drug trafficking charges will go to jail for life, without parole but murderers get off on insanity pleas. But I am not willing to say I know the right way. I think if I had lost someone I would be more inclined to be full of hatred and I might even demand harsher punishments. But I have known hatred and despair, and I don't think it gets you anywhere even if it comes packaged under the name Justice. <regretfulhalo>
Date: 8/28/2003 4:51:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34814    regret I would have to say I agree very much with your statement! Thanks for the post!
Date: 8/28/2003 5:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 34487    Yes, I agree with you. I'm all for, "an eye for an eye." Of course, it's ironic that if we gave them the same punishment that they were convicted of, it would be considered "cruel and unusual punishment." Crazy isn't it.... I was going to write a post on this same issue but never got around to it. Good post.
Date: 8/28/2003 5:45:00 PM  From Authorid: 13119    I don't think it is hatred that fills peoples hearts, that is a generalization about everyone's feelings. I personally feel that anyone who can harm a child or an animal isn't showing the "human-ness" that makes us a higher being so with that said, I think they deserve to be treated in the manner that they treat their innocent victims. Sure makes a great deterrent for the next sicko.
Date: 8/28/2003 6:25:00 PM  From Authorid: 23075    I believe in an eye for an eye...however..if you do somethign to me...you are asking for it back twice as bad...and I'm the kind of person that doesn't get mad...I get even
Date: 8/28/2003 6:32:00 PM  From Authorid: 16705    an eye for an eye is what i believe. Hamb918
Date: 8/28/2003 7:58:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34814    Hey thanks for the replies. I use to be all about the don't get mad even thing. Now I either laught at people, get super even once in a blue moon. Or sue the mess out of them LOL That works good also.
Date: 8/28/2003 7:59:00 PM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 34814    I however have no idea how I would react if someone hurt someone I love badly.
Date: 8/28/2003 9:40:00 PM  From Authorid: 36901    I'm not sure excatly what the punishment should be, but I do think that if they were a lot harder on people they would think twice about doing the awful things they do.
Date: 8/28/2003 11:27:00 PM  From Authorid: 22080    harsher punishment? yeah ok, how about extensive therapy, rehabilitation is the key here...unless its molestation
Date: 8/29/2003 9:48:00 PM  From Authorid: 34487    I'd definitely say yes to the rehabilitation and therapy but yes also to harsher punishments. These kinds of people need long-term help anyway.
