I got out of the military about 2 years ago and I remember this one time when I was on a burial detail, there was going to be a lot of cameras for some well decorated officer that had passed away. Well...he was in the Army, but I forget the reason why they had the Marines do the burial? At any rate...I remember lots of people came by to see us all stand there with our M-14's at parade rest and making comments like...."oh the MARINES are here!...they are always so professional and never mess up". Well...I am not sure if it through everyone's in my detail was feeling cocky or what, but the entire routine was perfect!! Every snap and pop made was beautiful!! Then at last when our senior Staff NCO was about to give us a "right face" to march us off to our military vehicle...the command came out, "left face!" Well...you would think, hey...we all know he means "right face" right? Oh gosh!...I had the Marine in front of me give a "left face", the Marine behind me made a "right face", and me...I stayed frozen with both Marines on either side facing me!! Oh my gosh...you could only imagine how embarrasing that was with all those families, cameras, and my commanding officer watching our big blunder!! Now to easily fix this...I think our Staff NCO should have said, "detail, the command was left face, correct yourself", then perhaps we would have all just marched out the opposite direction and proceeded with a "to the rear march" movement. Well...no that didn't quite happen. He gave the command, "right face" thinking that hey...that was the correct command and he just wanted those Marines to correct themselves (ie...I would make a right face)...Well...when he gave the command, half the Marines followed while some still stood there!! I think it just knocked all our confidence in the dirt that no matter what he would say...we had already screwed up for our audience. Well..he finally had to call us out by name to correct ourselves and we marched safely to our vehicle. I remember there was total silence all the way back to base and all I can remember was that who jinxed us that day! Oh well...looking back, it is rather humorous...uhhh...what am I talking about!...I feel like crying right now!! :(
