In spite of Gary, I vowed I would enter that talent show and sing. I didn't care whether he tried choking me or not; whether he would kill me for defying him was a mystery, but I went to the little general store in town anyway with the money I'd been saving for a while in my wallet.
All over town were signs advertising the talent show. I noticed people stopping to gawk at them during my excursion. Smiling to myself, I wondered just how many people would attend. That, however, was to be the fateful day I was to meet my opponent, Tex Moreland.
I strolled into the general store and on towards the jeans. As this town was built up back during the Civil War era, it had a 1930-ish feel to it. Even the main street wasn't paved and at night, people were afraid to stroll the streets alone because of how dark and terrifying this place appeared. It looked like a ghost town, for the most part, except when there were the occasional big events being held.
I found the least offensive pair of jeans near the back and started looking for a T-shirt when I heard a male voice say arrogantly, "Come next Saturday, I'm going to win that talent show! Anybody who thinks they're a match for me has another think coming!" The voice had the nasal quality of most snobbish people. I stuck my head out from behind the rack of shirts to see a tall boy dressed like a cowboy speaking to a girl. She was all entranced with him as he boasted and bragged about how good he was. Reminded me of Gary.
I smirked and ducked back behind the rack to find a shirt that fit. I finally found one and walked over to the counter to pay for my items. Cowboy was already there, paying for a cowhide belt. When he saw me in my pitiful attire, he gave me an indignant look that told me he was condescending.
"Seems to me as if trash can afford new clothes once in a while when I thought all they could afford were hand-me-downs." Cowboy laughed at his own sorry excuse of a joke.
I looked him up and down, sizing him up and weighing out his strenghts and weaknesses. I smiled ironically. "I'll be able to afford plenty if I win the talent show."
"You?" he snorted. "Nobody has a chance to win that but me."
I shrugged. "We'll see."
"Yeah...we'll see."
"Tex, leave him alone," the girl pleaded, wearing a fed up look on her pretty face.
He kissed her cheek and, before ignoring me completely, said, "Be prepared to lose."
