What do you think is happening here?

I fall for it every single time! I should know better by now!

Shopping for our home with my husband is always the same. He always wants his own way. He denies this, of course and accuses me of being childish. Gee thanks! Read this and make up your own mind...

Here we are, choosing wallpaper for our dining room. We both know we don't want anything too fussy so we look and hope we find something we both like. But it doesn't work out like that. I have quite an open mind and will consider many things. So, when I see something I like, I show him but he turns his nose up at ALL my suggestions. He's more narrow minded and likes very few things. When he shows me something he likes, I'll consider it and realise that it's actually quite nice. This kind of thing has gone on for years until recently when it occured to me what is going on. I believe his turning his nose up at all my suggestions is a form of manipulation. I am then forced to consider only his choices and pick something from them. When I pointed this behaviour out to my husband, he accused me of being childish. Am I being childish? Or is he actually manipulating me? What do you think?

The way to handle it is to suggest some things that you don't like, wait for him to pick what he does like then go to what you like and say "Honey, you have great taste, I really like this one" He won't even remember not saying that he liked that one. Reverse it on him, it usually works!
Date: 9/21/2003 8:58:00 AM  From Authorid: 62262    I don't think that you are being childish. I don't think it would hurt for him to let you pick something out! Both of you live there. I think both of you should be able to decorate. Kel
Date: 9/21/2003 9:05:00 AM  From Authorid: 53900    I think he is being childish...try going and picking out what you like and having him go pick out what he likes seperately and I bet you could come up with at least one you both pick that way you would not have to get upset and he would not be able to turn down everything you pick automatically
Date: 9/21/2003 9:45:00 AM  From Authorid: 943    It's manipulation....Men, they are the biggest babies going! Sorry guys, but you really are. LOL.
Date: 9/21/2003 4:31:00 PM  From Authorid: 42945    good heavens, my husband will admit he knows nothing about decorating and he has no idea about colour schemes...lol!!! he usually leaves it up to me because he admits to this....but I always ask him anyway...then he tells me to go ahead and choose....and btw, I dont think you are being childish, he sounds like he is manipulating you....good luck hun....hugs
Date: 9/21/2003 7:54:00 PM  From Authorid: 34487    No, you're probably seeing something that is really taking place. I guess if I were you, I wouldn't settle for what he wants... I'd try other options altogether insead. For instance, if you can't agree on a wallpaper, try to agree on a paint, there's a lot more colors to choose from. If he refuses to agree with you on anything at all.... don't give in. No offense guys... but the inside of the house is supposed to be for the woman to decorate and the guys get the landscaping! ;)
Date: 9/22/2003 12:22:00 PM  From Authorid: 48809    I think You Choose has got it right! The way I see it, I am the one who always did the housework ... so I think the interior should be something I can live with . Look at it this way...If he was to go buy a John Deere tractor ( which are always painted an ugly green and you asked him to paint it purple ... (to go with your indoor color scheme, of course ,) would he do that ? Of course not... so get what you like and don't worry about it! lol.
Date: 9/22/2003 10:55:00 PM  From Authorid: 34487    I love that example Posey! I'll remember that one for my hubby! LOL :)
Date: 9/23/2003 6:31:00 AM  From Authorid: 48809    YC... don't tell him I told you this though! lol.
Date: 9/23/2003 6:14:00 PM  From Authorid: 34487    Nah....don't worry, I won't! LOL :)
Date: 9/25/2003 12:53:00 AM  ( From Author ) From Authorid: 52746    I'm glad I'm not alone in this assumption. Thanks for your support everyone! We've narrowed the wallpaper down to our 3 favourites. We both have a different first, but my second favourite is the same as his first and our third favourite is the same! At least we agree on the colour which we're painting the paper! LOL
Date: 9/27/2003 8:29:00 AM  From Authorid: 53558    Isn't it ways the case. Great big hugs. Take care.
Date: 9/5/2007 2:03:00 PM  From Authorid: 63400    Yes I do! always!

Next time he accuses you of being childesh accuse him of not being childish enough!
